Incident Summary – May 2026
During May 2026, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department responded to nine outside fire incidents and two hazardous-situation investigations.

Outside fires included trash, brush, and other small outdoor fires occurring at various locations throughout the City of Vernon. Several incidents involved fires associated with unhoused individuals, including one fire on Vernon Avenue that spread beneath an exterior stairwell and resulted in charring to structural members, though no active structural fire extension was found.

Other incidents involved rubbish fires along roadways, beneath a freeway bridge, and adjacent to buildings, all of which were extinguished without reported injuries. One rubbish fire was suspected to have been caused by a lithium-ion battery, and another trashcan fire was extinguished by an automatic sprinkler system before fire personnel arrived.

The Department also responded to two hazardous-situation investigations: a propane bottle explosion at a business, where no injuries were reported and the scene was secured, and an investigation of an odor originating from a rail car. Following an inspection by BNSF Railway and Department personnel, no hazardous materials were identified in the rail car.
