Public Comments – Feb 21 2023
Victorville, California
Good evening, Council Chambers,
My name is Kailin Scott, and I am the CEO/ Executive Director at Neighborhood Housing Services of the Inland Empire also known as NHSIE. Founded in 1981, NHSIE was launched by three World War II veterans who wanted to make homeownership more available to black and brown people in San Bernardino. For the past 40 years, NHSIE has supported residents throughout the Inland Empire in building greater financial security, achieving homeownership, and working through tough economic challenges. We have fostered knowledge and resilience through classes, individualized coaching, and resource sharing. Helping more than 3,000 families become first-time homeowners and with an investment of over $800M in home purchases throughout the Inland Empire, NHSIE is here tonight to declare its commitment to Victorville and the high desert. This region has seen record breaking growth in housing for individual looking for a different quality of life and other deciding factors caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This however, caused some strain on the long-time residence of the region who are low-to-moderate income earners with the growing competition and increased cost for quality affordable housing and other financial stressors due to supply chain delays, loss of jobs and public health concerns. As a result of the increased cost burdens, residence have turned to living in homes that are overcrowded and acquired large amounts of debt, which has pushed them further from the true American Dream, safety and stability. NHSIE is perfectly position to meet this need with our comprehensive education programs, highly qualified counseling staff and proven track record of developing homeowners. As well as, a strong infrastructure as a (Community Housing Developer Organization) CHDO and (Community Development Finance Institution) CDFI. With the support of the community and the council, I am confident NHSIE will an asset in continuing the growth of this vibrant community.
