RECOGNIZING OUTSTANDING

THE HISTORY OF CHALLENGE COINS AND NEED FOR COMMEMORATION

HISTORY OF CHALLENGE COINS
• Traditionally given to prove
membership, boost morale and
feature cultural attributes of an
organization.
• Once called “Portrait Medals”
during the Renaissance and were
used to commemorate specific
events noteworthy of
memorialization.
• Adopted by Military and Law
Enforcement agencies to recognize
“proof” of exemplary actions or
behaviors of an individual or a unit.

HOW TO KEEP A COIN
• Coins are transferred from supervisory or
management staff to the individual being
acknowledged through a traditional
handshake.
• Once the coin is in their possession, they are
allowed to carry the coin in a pocket as a
constant reminder of the values they uphold.
• The coin can also be set out on display in one's
workstation to display the values they wish to
demonstrate.

CODE COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT

✓ Moments where they go above and beyond the call of duty, ✓ Demonstrating terrific customer service or dedication , ✓ Overcoming challenging situations,
✓ Adding value to our organization.
• Coins have been issued to Executive Staff for their efforts, guidance and support in expanding our department to meet the goals and expectations of our residents .
• The City Council’s continued support of expanded Code Compliance Department operations through Measure P will aid in the implementation of our challenge coin program to recognize exceptional efforts.

FINAL THOUGHTS
• There is ample scientific research that shows
staff who feel appreciated will amplify their
efforts.
• Recognition leads to engagement, engagement
leads to commitment, commitment leads to
successful and positive relationships.
• Small efforts may have huge impacts.
• Time to R.I.S.E. up.

R.I.S.E. Method:

Regular – frequent recognition builds sense of
community.

Immediate- Marks the desired behaviors while in
the moment.

Specific – Highlights those behaviors so they are
clearly understood to all.

Encouraging – builds a sense of teamwork and the
demonstration of encouragement from leadership
seeps into how team members treat each other.
