SPOTLIGHT

Each year, we coordinate three Free Dump Day events where residents are encouraged to bring excess items for disposal and recycling. Our hauler, Victorville Disposal, brings roll-off containers and compacting trash trucks to receive and process items brought from verified residents. Continuous advertisement of these events is accomplished via flyers included with monthly billings and in-person employee attendance at local events.

Our most recent event, held on Saturday, July 22nd, was a tremendous success with over 450 vehicles attending and collecting:
# of Tons of Trash 75
# of Tons of Scrap Metal 10
The Environmental Programs Division participates in numerous events throughout the city to reach residents with information about our programs. This constant community engagement helps us educate our community on our recycling programs, proper and free disposal options, and other helpful services. We also inform residents about events held throughout the year including Free Dump Day, Community Clean-Up Days, and Shred Fest Days.

Most recently, we participated in all four events f or the City’s Concerts in the Park series, staffed a booth at our annual National Night Out held on August 1st, and staffed two booths at the High Desert Home Show held at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds the last weekend in September. In the coming months, we will also participate in the City’s Fall Festival and Hallow-Boo Drive Thru events.
# of Tons of Mattresses 4
# of Tons of Garden Trimmings 6

08/23 – Ramona and Mitsubishi 08/24 – Amargosa at Roadhouse 09/11 – Pahute and Locust Our crews provide support to the Code Enforcement Department as needed. Once a Code Enforcement Officer has posted the site and it has been vacated and authorized for abatement, our crews come in to clear the location of trash and debris. This task has continually grown in volume and takes more time as our homeless population has increased throughout the years to become a daily task for all crews. This most common items removed include clothing and electronics.

From July through September 2023:

Homeless Encampments abated 406
Despite the many programs offered by the City for free and convenient disposal, there are still individuals that choose to illegally dump debris on vacant lots, roadsides, and in alley ways.

These illegal dumps are unsightly and create hazards to our community, including to the vehicles traveling our roads and to the environment. Division workers routinely monitor areas for illegal dumps and use a variety of equipment to remove and clean up the debris.

Items removed between July and September 2023 included:

Total tons collected 32
Mattresses collected 179
Sofas collected 92
Tires collected 987
Sites abated 1,616
Total Tons collected 288

California’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Strategy, commonly referred to as SB 1383, passed in 2016 and went into effect on January 1, 2022. Commercial organics recycling programs for food scraps, garden trimmings, and wood waste have already been implemented in the City.

Our residential organics recycling program is expected to launch citywide in late 2023/early 2024, with all residents receiving green carts to properly dispose of their garden trimmings, wood scraps, and leftover food scraps/food waste.

We were “lid flipping” in the residential organics recycling pilot area, reviewing all three cans and providing feedback via “Oops” and “Gold Star” tags. There has been continual improvement since the launch of the pilot program, diverting an average of 3.55 tons of organic material each week.

Throughout the year, we sponsor events to assist our residents with cleanup and large projects that fall outside of their normal routine; events like ShredFest, Free Dump Day, and Community Cleanup. Our next quarter will include two of these events; Free Dump Day will be held on Saturday, November 18th and ShredFest & Compost Giveaway will be held on Saturday, November 4th. Details on all our City cleanup programs can be found online at Victorvilleca.gov/DumpItRightVV.
