*Brief description of the departmentVisalia Fire Department (VFD) is a career fire department comprised of 70 firefighters providing an all-hazard response to 143,031 residents living in 40 square miles. Visalia holds the county seat and has a much larger daytime population due to the hospital, commerce center of the county, and the number of jobs provided in the industrial park for an approximate work-week population increase of 70,000. Operating from 6 strategically positioned fire stations, utilizing a fleet of 10 engines, 3 ladder trucks, 2 paramedic squads, 1 rescue, 1 hazmat, and 5 command vehicles, firefighters provide structural and wildland fire suppression, rescue response to the operational level, hazmat to the technician level, and EMS first response to the ALS level. The department provides 24/7 coverage utilizing a 3 shift system staffing 5 paramedic engines and 2 paramedic ladder trucks, with a minimum of 3 personnel per apparatus as well as 2 paramedic squad vehicles with a minimum of 2 personnel each. *Brief description of the
department's service area

grant would be used
(6) HURST EXWT/E3 Watertight 9Ah Batteries. These batteries power the departments 6 sets of HURST eDraulic Combi Tools
*Description of how the equipment,
products, or services would benefit
the department and/or the
community it serves
Over the past 4 years, VFD has responded to 2230 auto accidents that have resulted in 46 extrications. To expedite the extrication process, the frontline apparatus are equipped with battery powered eDraulic combi rescue tools with cutting and spreading capabilities, also known as Jaws of Life.
With an average of 558 motor vehicle accidents per year or nearly 2 per day, there is always the possibility that a victim will have to be extricated. A trauma patient's best chance of survival is to arrive at the trauma center within the "Golden Hour." These batteries will allow first responders reliable battery life which can be used at a variety of incidents such as auto extrications, building collapses to extricate trapped victims, at an industrial accident when a worker becomes trapped in a piece of machinery, agriculture/farming related incidents to raise objects off of people, force entry, or cut security bars, etc.
The new batteries for the HURST eDraulic Combi tools will enhance the VFD's ability to perform its daily operations and increase its ability to protect life and property and will instill confidence, not only with the firefighters but the residents as well, that firefighters will be capable of handling an extrication incident effectively and efficiently.
*Estimated cost of the equipment,
products, or services
