The City Council engaged in a detailed discussion focused on balancing immediate safety improvements with a more comprehensive, data -driven approach. Councilmembers emphasized the importance of reducing speeds, particularly around school zones, while acknowledging legal constraints on speed studies and the need to complete a broader analysis before implementing lower limits, such as 20 or 15 mph in school zones.
There was concern about delaying safety measures on Harratt Street, but consensus formed around pursuing a Citywide, holistic study of school zone speed limits to maximize impact, efficiency, and public awareness rather than making isolated changes. The City Council also highlighted the critical role of enforcement and complementary strategies, including traffic calming and potential future tools like speed cameras, noting that speed limits alone are insufficient without compliance measures. Overall, the Councilmembers expressed strong interest in a comprehensive, proactive safety strategy that integrates engineering, enforcement, and data to prioritize safety.
