CITY MANAGER’S REPORT/MAYOR’S REPORT/MATTERS PRESENTED BY COUNCILMEMBERS/ OTHER AGENCY REPORTS City Manager Pulone said the City has a measure on the November ballot, and last week the Orange County Registrar of Voters conducted a random letter draw and the City was assigned the letters JJ for the measure. He said Measure JJ coincides with the City's Measure B, which passed several years ago, and requires the vote of the people to move forward with the rezoning of properties. To provide more information to the community regarding Measure JJ, the City will be holding public workshops at 6:00 p.m. on September 4th, 12th and another on the 19th, at different locations to best reach more members of the community. He said more information can be found on the City's website.
Councilwoman Lim said she attended the State of the County this month where pressing issues about affordability, public safety, insurance costs, and the fentanyl and homeless crises were discussed. On August 8th she attended the Santa Ana River Flood Protection Agency meeting and visited the Seven Oaks dam in San Bernardino with City Manager Pulone. She attended the National Night Out event with several of her Council colleagues and thanked everyone who attended. She concluded by announcing the last Movie in the Park on September 21st at Eastside Park featuring Kung Fu Panda 4 and urged residents to attend.
Mayor Pro Tem Beth Haney serves on the Board of Directors for the Transportation Corridor Agency and encouraged residents who want to learn about their projects, to visit www.thetollroads.com. She said there is a lot of road work going on and stated that 194 CalTrans workers were killed by drivers in the last 10 years due to distracted drivers. She urged everyone to drive safely. Mayor Pro Tem Haney also serves on the Board for the Orange County Fire Authority and said that yesterday they held a press conference to announce that the two Firehawk helicopters are now in operation. She spoke of the OCFA Firehawk demonstration and expressed her enthusiasm.
Councilwoman Peggy Huang reminded residents of the importance of driving the speed limit and cautioned that there are a lot of schools and daycares in the community to be mindful of. She reminded everyone to drive safely in road construction areas as well. Councilwoman Huang also spoke about mosquitos and the diseases they carry, urging the community to be careful when traveling as most cases are outside of the County.
Mayor Campbell shared that at the last meeting, Council unanimously approved a resolution requesting that the Insurance Commissioner's Office take emergency action to address the insurance crisis. She said that since then, the Orange County Board of Supervisors has also adopted a resolution and the Orange County Council of Governments will also have the resolution on their agenda. She spoke about the impact of insurance costs across the state. Mayor Campbell reiterated the comments by Councilwoman Lim and said National Night Out was a great event and thanked the Orange County Sheriffs Department for hosting that as well as the recent Business Watch meeting. She encouraged business owners to attend the next meeting and to consider installing cameras for added safety. Mayor Campbell attended the Future CEO Award Ceremony earlier in the day, organized by the Yorba Linda Chamber Foundation. She attended the Pop Warner Kick-off and said this is the 51st Anniversary. As part of the City’s ongoing infrastructure maintenance and in preparation for the upcoming school year, she said the City has completed concrete repairs along the travel route to Yorba Linda Middle School on Casa Loma Avenue and Bastanchury Road. Over 1,000 square feet of sidewalk and 330 linear feet of curb and gutter were reconstructed and said she hopes the community enjoys the enhancements. Mayor Campbell concluded her comments by providing an update on the Pollinator Garden at Paseo Del Prado, north of Calle Bella and south of Travis Road. She said the Paseo Del Prado Pollinator Garden is attracting a variety of pollinators this summer season. In April, Love Yorba Linda volunteers and City staff transformed water-consuming turf into a beautiful, eco-friendly space with hundreds of shrubs, plants, and trees and is now attracting pollinators like insects and butterflies to promote plant reproduction. She encouraged residents to enjoy a scenic detour and see the pollinators up close.
