DISCUSSION/BACKGROUND
THE NEIGHBORHOOD SCULPTURE STROLL
Before the Council today is a proposal from the Yountville Arts Commission that would facilitate long-term placement of approved outdoor sculptures in Yountville neighborhood parks and Town-owned areas as a gift to our Yountville residents.
Mission: The Neighborhood Sculpture Stroll is proposed as a public art program featuring permanent sculptures acquired for long-term placement in Yountville’s neighborhood parks and Town-owned areas. The purpose is to create a lasting outdoor collection of sculptures for Yountville residents. It is distinct from the Yountville Art Walk, which presents a rotating collection of temporary installations along main streets and pathways, and would focus on placing art in neighborhood areas frequented mainly by residents.
Goal: The Neighborhood Sculpture Stroll seeks to bring public art into Yountville’s parks and neighborhoods, creating accessible, walkable experiences that connect residents to art in everyday spaces. Through thoughtful acquisition and placement, the program builds a lasting collection that reflects the character and spirit of the community and is rooted in the belief that art should be a part of daily life. This is not intended to be promoted to the visiting public, though it will be on public view. It is a way to enrich the neighborhoods of our residents. It is Yountville Arts’ gift to the community.
Funding: The Yountville Arts Commission continues to build a fund balance in the Community Foundation Art Fund. The Yountville Arts Commission oversees and administers these funds through the Community Foundation. The fund grows when sculptures are sold from the Art Walk. Currently, the fund balance is approximately $86,000. Past projects funded through the Community Foundation Art Fund in recent years include the repairs to the Yountville Underpass Mural as well as purchases of other permanent sculptures including Poly and Raven. The Neighborhood Sculpture Walk Program would be funded through the Yountville Community Foundation Art Fund as funds are available. There would also be opportunities to apply for grants and alternative funding for this project as appropriate.
Process for Selection: Sculptures for this program are expected to be selected from sculptures that are expiring on the Art Walk. When a sculpture is being considered for acceptance into the Neighborhood Sculpture Stroll Program, the following process for consideration and approval would be followed:
1. The Art Walk sub-committee would review the proposed sculpture and decide if it qualifies for the program.
2. It is then presented to the Yountville Arts Commission for approval at a public meeting encouraging public feedback and participation.
3. It is then presented to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission for input, discussion, and approval of the placement site. This would be another opportunity for encouraging public feedback and participation.
4. It would then come before the Town Council to approve the purchase of the sculpture. This would be another opportunity for encouraging public feedback and participation.
Installation and Maintenance: The Yountville Arts Commission would work with Town staff to ensure the placement is well suited for the installation needs of the sculpture being considered. As is customary with the Art Walk, Town staff would facilitate the installation of the sculptures and hire contractors for assistance as warranted.
Ongoing maintenance and cleaning would be the responsibility of the Town and would be facilitated through the Parks and Recreation Department as it is currently for the Art Walk.
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission received, discussed, provided feedback and unanimously approved the program as their May 21, 2026, meeting.
The Yountville Arts Commission received the proposal, discussed and unanimously approved the Neighborhood Sculpture Program concept at their July 6, 2026, meeting.
