DISCUSSION:

The Healthy Yucaipa Committee (HYC) is currently comprised of seven members and makes recommendations to City Council, implementing directives related to projects, events, and health - oriented programs.

On Monday, September 19, 2022, the HYC voted to request approval and funding from the City Council to host a series of three 5K runs (The Run Series) during the FY 2022/2023. The goal of The Run Series is to promote health and fitness, provide residents an opportunity to train for a race, and to help improve the quality of life for youth and adults within the community.

It is the goal of the HYC to host the first run of The Run Series on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2022, at 7:30 a.m. The HYC is anticipating 200 participants for the first run, with an increase in each run thereafter. On race day, participants will receive a t-shirt with a logo branding the event, a bib with a number and a goody bag. The proposed entry fees are:
• $30 - 5K Registration Fee
• $20 - One Mile Fun Run Fee

The HYC is proposing that the Run will start and finish at the Yucaipa Community Park. To conduct the Run, the HYC is requesting the use of the Yucaipa Community Park and Bryant Glen Sports Complex trails. If approved, all organizations scheduled to use the Yucaipa Community Park and/or Bryant Glen will be notified of The Run Series and the HYC will work with City staff to execute a marketing plan, logistical plan, and a registration process.

The two addition runs will take place in the winter and spring.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The estimated expense to hold the Three Run Series is approximately $30,000, which will cover the costs of the timing supplies and system, t-shirts, bibs, water, marketing, and snacks for the participants. It is anticipated that revenues earned from The Run Series registration will be in the amount of $20,000, for a net cost of $10,000. There is sufficient funding in the non -department contingency account to complete a budget adjustment and transfer the expenditure to the Community Services Department special events division. If approved, the remaining balance in the non -department contingency account will be $190,000.
