SUBJECT: City Council Reorganization
RECOMMENDATION:
That City Council choose one of its members as Mayor and another of its members as Mayor Pro Tempore.
DISCUSSION:
Resolution No. 2021-12, City Council Rules of Procedure, states that the Council shall meet annually to choose one of its members as Mayor and another of its members as Mayor Pro Tempore.
Nominations for the office of Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore may be made by any member of the Council and need not be seconded in order to be effective. Each selection shall be by three or more affirmative votes. In the event that no person receives three or more votes in the selection process for one or both offices, the selection process shall be repeated immediately, provided, however, that the two persons receiving the highest number of votes in the preceding selection process shall be the only nominees for the office to be filled. If, upon repeating the selection process for Mayor or Mayor Pro Tempore, no person has received three affirmative votes for such office, the Council may either repeat the selection process until the officer has been duly selected or may continue the selection to the next regular meeting of the Council.
Pursuant to Resolution No. 2021-12, the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore selected shall serve until the next meeting scheduled for selection of Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore and a Councilmember shall not serve successive terms as Mayor.
