✓Successful Spring Art Show
°New Board Volunteers
With the Spring of 2024 ending soon, I am reflecting on the positive changes that YVAA has experienced since the last fall season in 2023. Our organization has experienced a great revitalization through the efforts of our YVAA volunteers and some very talented artists and photographers that have presented at our monthly meetings. We experienced that positive energy once again at the 2024 Spring Art Show that was part of the Music and Arts Festival this year. Not only did we have more artwork on display, but the new venue elevated the event, provided a great ambience, and increased our attendance.

I remember last October; we only had about nine people present at our monthly meeting. Then in November, things started picking up with Cate Salenger's demo. David Fairrington's paint -a -long at the December potluck was lots of fun and attracted more members to attend. Then Elizabeth Rydall and Buffy Kaufman started off January and February with a bang, engaging members with their innovative art styles and techniques. In March, we experienced a mesmerizing slide show of Josh Endres' award -winning photography. Josh has now opened his studio on Yucaipa Blvd right here in town. Monica Foulston presented an engaging demonstration on abstract techniques in April. Now our membership has grown to over forty members with increased attendance around thirty attendees. Furthermore, we have added more board volunteers to help run the organization. With all these positive changes, we are excited about what the future holds for YVAA!
For our May meeting, we have featured artist, Lindsey Foggett, who lives in Forest Falls and has a studio there. Lindsey promises to keep YVAA members and guests engaged with stories of what it is like to be a "Wildlife Artist." We hope to see you all there next Thursday, May 16th at 7pm.

This month, the featured presenter will "Wildlife Artist," Lindsey Foggett.

Members and visitors will get to explore over 40 years of Lindsey Foggett's experience as a painter, naturalist, and a gallery owner. Lindsey Foggett's future seemed determined from a very early age. Growing up in a small village in the heart of the English countryside, she soon developed a love and fascination for wildlife and nature. Encouraged by two artistically talented parents, her passion to paint and study wildlife was to evolve into a lifelong career. Self-taught, Lindsey paints primarily with acrylic, and occasionally gouache, and has painted full time since 1981. She works in a natural, detailed style, striving to portray not only realism, but also to capture the mood and personality of the animals. Her work focuses in on North American predatory animals, showing not only their powerful intense nature but also their gentle, nurturing, softer side.

To obtain reference for her work, she has traveled throughout much of North America, where she observes, sketches and photographs wildlife within their natural habitat. Research trips have included extended canoeing expeditions into remote wilderness areas. One such trip entailed a 170-mile journey along the George River, in Northern Quebec, Canada, to the Arctic Ocean. Witnessing caribou herds, black bear and birds by day and the northern lights by night.

Lindsey's work has been exhibited in shows and galleries throughout the United States and internationally in Hong Kong and Mayfair, London.

This month, Lindsey will discuss what it takes to paint wildlife as a subject matter to create stunning and visually engaging art. She will also cover the business and marketing side of working full-time as an artist to promote artwork. Her presentation will include highlights about her artwork, the selection of various mediums and creating great art compositions. To find out more of Lindsey's work, artistic style, gallery and prints available on her online store, visit her website at

2024 Spring Art Show Highlights
Attendees looking at the art on display at the show inside the YPAC building.

Our 2024 Spring Art Show was a huge success this year! The show featured 144 entries of YVAA's members, non-members, and high school student artwork.

There were eleven art categories that featured some of the most fantastic and creative art like we have never seen before. Judging was done on Friday, May 4th, by two independent judges that are not part of YVAA. The judges were Chick Curtis, a seasoned artist/teacher and Annette Gregory, an Inland Empire professional photographer. The artwork on display left us in awe of the talent and creativity of all the artists and photographers in our community. The show was held on Saturday, May 4th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm inside the YPAC facility in combination with the flower show at the entrance of the lobby, which made it a much bigger show for visitors to enjoy.

YVAA's team of volunteers worked all year long to organize the 2024 Spring Art Show with the City of Yucaipa to be part of this year's Music and Arts Festival.

The show would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of all the volunteers that helped make this year's exhibition a success.

Last Month's Art Demonstration
The April featured artist, Monica Foulston, provided an entertaining and engaging demonstration on how to create art using alcohol ink techniques. Monica shared that she uses "Yupo" brand ink media paper that she purchases from local art supply stores. She likes to use Tim Holtz inks for her art, which are available online for purchase. Some of the supplies she uses to paint and manipulate the ink are size 8 brushes, card making stamps, bottled compressed air and an air baffle. Monica first demonstrated how to add drops of pure ink color on the paper to create blends and later demonstrated dropping alcohol over the inks to create patterns. She explained that adding drops of alcohol to the ink makes the ink spread further by pushing it away. She then demonstrated how to mix the ink with the alcohol to make it flow. Monica uses Posca pens, which are a resist acrylic ink to add detail to her art. Resist pens are very useful to draw on the paper, which can be followed by the addition of colorful inks. By using compressed air, she caused the ink to spread in unique and interesting patterns and effects. Another tool that she used was a mini spray bottled filled with alcohol. She used cardstock paper to block off a portion of her painting and then sprayed the alcohol on the targeted ink area to create speckled effects. Monica recommended having a well - ventilated room when using alcohol to paint with inks. She hopes her art techniques and paintings will inspire our members to try out alcohol ink art. To find out more about Monica Foulston and to see more of her art, visit her website at v.jw.inonicaroulsEon.corn/
Monica Foulston will be offering summer alcohol ink classes in Redlands through RAA. Visit the website for summer updates on when the classes will be offered _ •: iz -s.

Scholarship News & Art Education
Makin., a 4iffetoncQ in, ArtDucuten,
Every year, YVAA awards scholarships to two Yucaipa High School students that plan on pursuing higher education to study the arts.

Through our fundraising efforts, our volunteers make this possible by working with the local high school to provide graduating seniors with scholarships each year. YVAA volunteers Judy Remele, Carol Maidlow and Lenore Will have been the team who help fulfill one of YVAA's core obectives each year; to provide scholarships that help further student education in the arts. This May, a parent of scholarship recipient, Morgan McCloskey, shared with us her gratitude for YVAA's scholarship contribution in helping with their daughters' educational journey. Her letter reminds us that we are making a difference towards furthering the educational goals of art students in our community.

Our daughter, Morgan McCloskey, was the recipient of last years scholarship from YVAA upon high school graduation from YHS. She has been an active member of local art
associations since middle school, showing her work in
regular exhibits, festivals as well as juried shows. She chose her career path at age 9, her dream college at age 13,
earning numerous awards & honing her skills along the way.

After attending Crafton Hills College this past year as she worked to complete her portfolio, her hard work &
determination led to her acceptance to Laguna College of Art and Design where she will begin as a freshman this fall, majoring in Game Art. College tuition is not for the faint of heart these days, so on behalf of Morgan and our entire family, we'd like to express our sincere gratitude for the scholarship awarded. YVAA is definitely included among
those who have contributed to her artistic journey and
determination to succeed.

Sincerely,
Aubrey Sanchez (Morgan's mom)

Summer Art Inspiration
Keep painting and taking photographs in the summer months.

As we wrap up YVAA's fall and spring season and prepare to go on summer hiatus from June through August, we hope our members continue to find inspiration and opportunities to keep painting and photographing. We look forward to seeing new, creative art and photography that members can share at the September 19th, 2024 monthly meeting.

To keep you inspired, we want to recommend local art and photography resources that you can explore. Many of these activities are announced on Facebook's Yucaipa Bulletin and Redlands Buzz pages that give updates on art events in our commmunity.

Locally, the Yucaipa Performing Arts Center (YPAC) is offering summer "Element Adult Art" classes led by instructor Daryl Bryan, through the summer every 15t and 3rd Thursday of the month from June thru August (except July 4th) for $15.00 each session. Supplies are included.

Registration is available online. For more information visit the website by clicking here: iPAC Art Classes or contact the YPAC at (909) 500-7714.

Some of our past YVAA presenters and demonstrators are members of other organizations, such as Redlands Camera Club (RCC) and Redlands Art Association (RAA). These presenters offer local classes and events that are also open to the public and could be of interest to our members.

As we mentioned previously, our April presenter, Monica Foulston, will be offering summer alcohol ink classes in Redlands at RAA. Visit their website for summer updates on all their class offerings by clicking here:

Artlohocog4Yaohy
Artist Kitty Stephens, who has been a part of YVAA and RAA, invites our members to visit her featured artist exhibition this summer. Show dates are June 1st-28th, with a reception on Saturday, June 15th from 1-4 pm.

Admission is free.

This summer, Bruce Herwig, a past YVAA presenter and president of the Redlands Camera Club, is offering a "Smart Phone Photography" course through RAA that is open to the public. The fee includes multiple sessions and involves group walks, hands-on editing, and group critique. To find out more click here: RAA %,_ r; Oa, .. or call RAA at (909) 792-8435.

Redlands Camera Club is also offering online photography zoom courses and a group photography trip to Birch Aquarium. For more information on these events visit their website by clicking here: _ _ or contact them directly through their website links.

Our last regular meeting will be on May 16th. We hope you all have a great summer break and we look forward to seeing you at the YVAA monthly meeting on Thursday, September 19th, 2024 at 7:00 pm.
