First Choice
FIRST choice for Board/Commission/Committee appointment:

Sustainable Burbank Commission
Describe any qualifications, experience, and education, as well as any technical or professional background you may have relative to the duties of this position.

In 2024, I completed the phenomenal Burbank Waste Warriors training program and developed a wonderful working relationship with Burbank's Recycling Center Specialist, Amy Hammes. Prior to this, due to my relationship with the sustainability-oriented entertainment business, EcoSet, I established a relationship with the Director of Sustainability for LA city's largest waste hauler, Athens Services, and was able to tour one of their MRFs, so I have seen firsthand the varying capacity to which solid waste is handled and accepted for recycling. In February 2024, I successfully launched a Green Committee at my labor union, I.A.T.S.E.

Local 80 (Grips/Crafts Service/Medics). As a committee chair, I attend our executive board meetings to provide advisory guidance and advocate for implementing sustainable initiatives and practices, and I have learned Robert's Rules of Order. With the broad support I received, in just one year I enacted many sustainable upgrades to our commercial building such as the installation of a water cooler, implementing separate blue and organics recycling services and capture bins, sourced donations of reusable dishware to replace single-use plastic bottles, coffee cups, and utensils, as well as provided training and best practices guides for our members about proper waste sorting and the local plastic reduction ordinances. For the past year, I have been attending the Sustainable Burbank Commission meetings as an observer, often walking to the meetings to keep my carbon footprint low and literally walk the talk. And as an attendee of a March city council meeting, my proposal during public comment of the Plastic Waste Reduction Ordinance to include mobile food service operators in a future round of outreach was incorporated. I am also a regular user of the Burbank 311 app, checking on our retailers as I shop for work, and have met with Burbank's Recycle Center new Analyst to report foodware and organics recycling violations.

So I am familiar with the relevant resources available to support enforcement of our city's sustainability ordinances.

What are your goals in serving on this Board/Commission/Committee? My goal is to be a strong advocate in helping Burbank meet its zero waste objectives and garner greater enthusiastic public participation in our goals. I would also help advocate for greater adoption of sustainable practices in Burbank's entertainment sector.

Why are you interested in serving on a board, commission or committee? Environmental issues of fire prevention / structural fire resilience; trash / recycling; water consumption, storm water runoff & replenishing our water table; increased electrical usage for car charging & AI graphics / solar power promotion, for me are all important issues that we are facing as a community. I love living in Burbank and being in a town where being a resident, we can make a difference in Our City, by getting involved. At the age of 16, I worked with a local Professor, to change a storm water drainage system that was going to destroy the DeGraaf Nature Center, in my hometown of Holland, Michigan. The storm water system called The Lela Drain, is functioning fine, and the DeGraff Nature is still a wonderful 18 acre preserve where everyone can learn about the native plants. See this link - https://outdoordiscovery.org/degraaf/ I've lived in Burbank since 1995, and I installed (2) drywells on my property to take all of my storm water runoff from the Main House, Guest House, and 3-car garage to deep root water my trees on my double lot property. These wells have never overflowed during the heaviest of our winter storms, and as a drainage option for our residence city wide, can be very useful to limit flooding and replenish our water table. I organic garden using compost bins, mulching grass & leaves, and use a push mower and electric gardening tools. I strongly believe in limiting use of gasoline engines. I have (6) citrus trees and an avocado tree that are thriving in very healthy soil. I also have a 50' pine tree, and several 30' tall Ash and Sycamore trees that shade my property and reduce the need for Airconditioning. I was the Chairman for the Rancho Providencia traffic advisory commission from 1996 to 2001. We had 40 committee meetings, 3 area wide meetings, and ultimately our traffic calming devises were implemented by the Burbank City Council in 2001. These traffic calming measures have been very useful to reduce traffic volume and speed for our residential area, during the Media Expansions for Disney / ABC and what was the NBC properties. I recently requested our Burbank Public Pools to change their hours of closures / partial usage, to maximize pool usage. The fall of 2025, the Pool Staff have implemented dramatic changes that is increasing pool usage and public access.
