Background Information:-
Why do you wish to serve as a member of this Board or Commission:

Since moving here in 1975, I have been drawn to the story of Fremont, particularly the rich story of the land and people who lived and worked at Patterson Ranch. In the spring of 1983, I was able to attend a jazz concert - fund raising event held on the lawn of the Patterson House. This was two years before the development and opening to the public of Ardenwood Historic Farm. At the time I was deeply struck, moved by the "spirit" of Ardenwood and the sense of the stories it held to explore, the lives of those who lived on the land pre-contact, the Indigenous Ohlone peoples, and the early settlers and founders of Patterson Ranch. I came away from that event knowing I would one day research and write about this history and place. Ultimately, I did write about the Ohlone and worked closely with Ohlone descendants, and this became the foundation of my work and personal journey, a treasured gift, in good part by my experience at Ardenwood in 1983.

I became a resident of Fremont when my family moved here in June 1975. I became a senior at Washington High School in that fall 1975 and have been here through my adulthood, raising a family, and working a career as Children's Services Librarian until my retirement in September 2021. I have dedicated my life to providing library services, programming, and community outreach for families and children, both professionally and as private citizen. I served on the Fremont Library Advisory Commission from 1988 to 1991 while I was a graduate student in Library and Information Science at San Jose State University. Now that I am retired, I am again serving on the Library Advisory Commission and now would like to serve on the George W. Patterson House Board. By serving on the Patterson House Advisory Board, I would be able to serve my community with the skills and outlook of a long-time resident, as a librarian and as a researcher/writer of local and Bay Area history. And, I am applying in order to be of service in my retirement, which has always been an important personal goal for me.

What would you bring by way of perspective or experience to this Board or Commission: I have lived in Fremont for 49 years. I have raised my children in Fremont and now have grandchildren who live here and attend the same school as my children once did - Glenmoor Elementary. In my capacity as librarian, I served as a union steward and as Assistant Chief Library Steward for SEIU 521 and worked on negotiations and planning with library management. In addition, I founded and directed the California -2-
Indian Storytelling Association, a non-profit, from 1995 to 2015. I wrote a book on the Ohlone Indians and worked on local history research. The research and writing of the book, The Costanon/Ohlone Indians of the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Area: A Research Guide (1997 Ballena Press), lead me to gain a unique perspective on my community and its history. My book originated from the research and writing of my master's thesis for the degree in Library and Information Science - The Decimation of Information on the Costanoan/Ohlone Indians of the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Area (1991 San Jose State University / Department of Information and Library Science). The research for my thesis involved accessing local history collections housed in Alameda County and Santa Clara County libraries, San Jose State University as well as at the University of California at Berkely, especially the ethnographic and historical collections at the Bancroft Library. In addition, I worked as a research and editorial assistant for anthropologists and archaeologists on various ethnographic and archaeological environmental and historical reports throughout Fremont and the Bay Area and Southern California from 1989 until 1997. I have also performed as a storyteller at Ardenwood, usually in the garden by the old pool, at various events from 1996 to 2004. I have lived in Ardenwood neighborhood since 2004 in a house my parents purchased new in 1984. I feel that my interest and experience would provide a thoughtful, informed, positive and fruitful impact on the George W. Patterson House Advisory Board.

Although my primary work has been as a librarian for Children's Services, I have always held a special interest in local history and the stories behind the passage of time - of people, cultures and places, particularly in Fremont where I have lived since 1975. I am currently a retired Children's Services Librarian, but continue to work on-call for Santa Clara County Library as an Extra Help Librarian. I worked for Santa Clara County Library from June 1995 to September 2021. I have worked in libraries from 1979, first as a library page/clerk, then Library Assistant and Librarian in both Alameda and Santa Clara County and UC Berkeley. I also currently serve on the Fremont Library Advisory Commission for the City of Fremont (since Spring 2023). In addition, I was honored to serve on the Fremont City Library Advisory Commission from 1988 to 1991 while I was a graduate student in Library Science. During my tenure the Library Commission provided consultation in the building and opening of the Fremont Main Library (1988 to 1989).
