Rent Review Board Application -2-
Background Information:

Why do you wish to serve as a member of the Rent Review Board?

I believe in civic and social responsibility. I also want to role model this for my two children. Out of all the Boards, Commissions & Committees available for citizens like me in Fremont, the Rent Review Board is where I feel I can contribute the most.

What would you bring by way of perspective or experience to the Rent Review Board?

I am destined to be a forever-tenant if I want my family to live and grow in Fremont – I cannot afford to own a home here. I have been a tenant of the Durham Greens Apartments on the corner of Auto Mall Pkwy and Grimmer Blvd for 15 years. I have seen many of my fellow apartment renters move out of Fremont because of unaffordable rent increases. My Landlord has increased my rent every single year I have been a tenant.

I ride the bus with my fellow apartment neighbors. I see them in the apartment complex walkway at the break of dawn in their company uniforms (Tesla, security guards, mechanics, construction workers, nurses). They speak different languages and drive different cars from other Fremonters whom I see around town. I don’t see my neighbors in the city hall meetings or town hall forums I have attended – I guess it’s because they are too busy working multiple jobs? I can bring a valuable point-of-view to the Rent Review Board as a current tenant who is invested in living in Fremont for the long-run. I want to make sure the 29,461 renters (39% of households in Fremont) have a representative who understands.

Do you currently or have you ever served in a leadership role or on a board of directors for a landlord or tenant related housing provider, trade association, organization or advocacy group? If so, please identify the organization, your involvement and dates of your participation.

No such experience, just a concerned citizen.

Do you have any experience in mediation and conflict resolution? If so, please describe.

Yes. As a former Peace Corps Volunteer, I conducted workshops in the schools and communities I served on topics such as conflict resolution and anger management. I know about de-escalation and being an active listener. As a former Support Counselor for a non-profit in Oakland which served the most at-risk foster care youth (Fred Finch Youth Center), I was trained on the topics mentioned – especially for parent or family reunification sessions. I am not afraid of conflict. I believe in speaking up when I see something wrong. I do not like to end meetings with no goal or an action item – I always strive to make sure every voice is heard in meetings. I want to make sure we move forward, not backwards.

Background Information:

Why do you wish to serve as a member of the Rent Review Board? I express a desire to be a member of the Rent Review Board in Fremont, California, because of the foregoing compelling reasons that are rooted in civic engagement, community service, and the importance of equitable housing practices.

1. Commitment to Fair Housing: Serving on the Rent Review Board allows an individual to advocate for fair housing practices. This is particularly significant in areas experiencing rapid growth and rising rents, where tenants may face financial hardships. By participating in this board, one can help ensure that rent increases are justified and that tenants have a voice in the process.

2. Community Representation: The Rent Review Board plays a crucial role in representing the interests of both landlords and tenants within the community. A member can contribute to balanced decision-making that considers the needs of all stakeholders involved in rental agreements. This representation is vital for fostering a harmonious living environment.

3. Policy Influence: Being part of the Rent Review Board provides an opportunity to influence local housing policies directly. Members can engage with broader issues such as affordable housing initiatives, tenant protections, and landlord responsibilities, thereby shaping policies that promote sustainable community development.

4. Conflict Resolution Skills: The role often involves mediating disputes between landlords and tenants. A desire to develop or utilize conflict resolution skills can motivate someone to join this board, as it requires diplomacy and negotiation abilities to facilitate fair outcomes.

5. Personal Growth and Civic Duty: Serving on such a board can be seen as fulfilling a civic duty while also providing personal growth opportunities through engagement with diverse community members and complex issues related to housing.

In summary, I want to be a member of the Rent Review Board because I have a strong commitment to social justice, community involvement, policy influence, conflict resolution, and personal development.

What would you bring by way of perspective or experience to the Rent Review Board? As a Black woman, my perspective and experience would bring a unique intersectionality to the Rent Review Board of Fremont, CA. This dual identity allows me to understand and advocate for the diverse needs of marginalized communities, particularly in housing issues that disproportionately affect people of color. My lived experiences would inform my approach to rent review processes, emphasizing equity and fairness in housing policies. I would be committed to addressing systemic inequalities within the rental market, advocating for affordable housing solutions, and ensuring that all voices are heard in discussions about rent increases and tenant rights.

Additionally, my background may include insights into the historical context of housing discrimination faced by Black individuals and families. This understanding is crucial for fostering a more inclusive environment where all residents can thrive. By promoting transparency and community engagement, I would aim to build trust between tenants and landlords while striving for resolutions that reflect the needs of the community.

Do you currently or have you ever served in a leadership role or on a board of directors for a landlord or tenant related housing provider, trade association, organization or advocacy group? If so, please identify the organization, your involvement and dates of your participation. My involvement on the board of a non-profit organization in Atlanta, GA, particularly in a leadership role related to landlord or tenant issues, suggests a commitment to addressing housing-related challenges within the community. Such organizations often focus on advocacy, education, and support for both landlords and tenants, promoting fair housing practices and resolving disputes.

Do you have any experience in mediation and conflict resolution? If so, please describe.

As a parent and college student who has studied psychology, criminal justice, sociology, and paralegal studies, you possess a unique blend of knowledge and experience that contributes to your skills in mediation and conflict resolution. My background in psychology provides insight into human behavior, emotions, and motivations, which are crucial for understanding the dynamics of conflicts. The study of criminal justice equips you with an understanding of legal frameworks and the implications of disputes within societal structures. Sociology enhances your awareness of social interactions and group behaviors, allowing you to navigate conflicts that arise from diverse perspectives. Additionally, your education in paralegal studies gives you practical skills in legal research and documentation, which are essential for effective mediation processes.

Myexperiences as a parent further enrich your conflict resolution abilities. Parenting often involves navigating disagreements and finding compromises among family members. This real -life practice complements your academic knowledge by providing firsthand experience in managing conflicts with empathy and effective communication.
