Subject: The lumberyard building
January 30, 2025
Dear La Quinta City Council Members,
Please know that I researched for more than two years to unravel the casita story, it was a labor of love, no one hired me or paid me. I just felt this community needed to honor this history.

You have an important opportunity to save the remains of a story and lifestyle of the forming of our beautiful city.

There is no more architectural style more warm and charming than Spanish Colonial revival from the 1930’s.

This lumberyard and early residents of the Maltby family helps to complete the historic story of the casitas and the Desert Club in which you have designated as the Historical area of our City.

You have a lovely balance of planning for the future, the beautiful present and now preserving the past.

I beg you to preserve both of the original historical Spanish Colonial Revival buildings on the Museum property. This would be a most memorable gift to future generations, respect to the present generation and an honor to the past generations.

Please make the right decision,
Maggie Gordon

Plans for Museum Campus Redesign
We favor keeping the Lumberyard as part of the Museum Campus. We are surprised that the destruction of this historic building is even on the table. There are so few “original buildings” in La Quinta that were integral to the building of the eventual City. We own a 1938 Casita in Yucatan Cove and the Lumberyard supplied materials to build these gem structures dotted throughout the City. It is historic, it has beauty, and could serve a new function for the City. “Old Town La Quinta” is a wonderful place but it is not the old heart of the City.

The coalescing of the buildings on the Museum Campus would increase the utilization of this area, steps from “Old Town”, better linking the two sites.

Rather than destroy the old, the new Crocker Art Museum reflects the best of both centuries, creating an exciting destination — a collage of old and new.

Hello,
I am writing in regards to the scheduled hearing on February 4th about the redesign of the Historical Museum campus. Of paramount importance to me is that the historical integrity of the buildings will be maintained. This should definitely include the preservation of the two adjacent buildings on the redesigned campus.

I want to thank the city council for your continuing efforts to improve our community while at the same time preserving the historical elements that cannot be replaced.

Kind regards,
Charles Wilson

I am writing this email to ask the city to please keep the historical integrity of both of the buildings on this property.

It is very important to me and other residents to keep the buildings the same so they remain intact with their HISTORICAL importance.

Thank you,
Celeste Varela

Palm Springs Airport Commission Report – January 15, 2025, Meeting Discussion and Action Items:

Contract Services Agreement for Customer Experience Program – PSM Squared for three years, not to exceed $275,000. Though for a three-year term, six months aŌer delivery, the Contractor won’t be performing any addiƟonal work or geƫng paid any addiƟonal amounts, and airport staff will be independently implemenƟng changes and creaƟng reports on all aspects of the three-year plan. The Commission approved recommending approval by the City Council.

Airport Leasing Policy and Terminal Lease Payments – The most significant impact is to provide structure and guidelines for organizaƟons interested in doing business with the airport, thereby standardizing contract provisions and saving staff Ɵme from having to start from scratch each Ɵme a new enƟty wants to explore leasing space at the airport.

Main Terminal Flooring Project – The plan is for the original terrazzo to be replaced with new terrazzo with the same design and overlaid on the original terrazzo, and extending throughout the rest of the landside public spaces with matching terrazzo, and removing all of the exisƟng carpeƟng. This work will be done in stages, and targeƟng low season to minimize the impact and disrupƟon to customers. The overall cost is guessƟmated to be around $3 million. This item is already going to the City Council to request permission to put the project out to bid.

Escalator Replacement Project – There is no greater place of embarrassment at the airport than when the escalators to and from the Bono Concourse break down or are making noise like they are on the verge of breaking down. Before the escalators are addresses, the two elevators need to be serviced and a contractor has been hired to start that work soon. The creaƟng of a Scope of Work for a RFP for the escalator project is the next step.

Noise CommiƩee Update – To clarify the airport staff’s authority regarding noise issues, once an aircraŌ is ‘wheels up’ the authority resides with the FAA, and aircraŌ operators have the legal right to fly over neighborhoods. Since a significant number of flights which draw noise complaints are associaƟon with the Palm Springs Air Museum, airport staff will coordinate their efforts with the Museum staff.

ExecuƟve Director Report – Staff has begun budgeƟng for the next two years, needing about 18 addiƟonal staff members, mostly in Maintenance. The ExecuƟve Director is in Washington, D.C. working with the FAA on our airport’s needs regarding Customs. A report will be provided in the near future.

Next Commission Meeting: February 19, 2025, at 5:30 PM. 2025 Airport Commission Calendar – Future planned meeƟngs on 2/19, 3/19, 4/16, 5/21, 6/18, 7/16, 9/17, 10/15, 11/19, 12/10.
