FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended action.

STRATEGIC PRIORITY: This item is part of the day-to-day operations identified in the Adopted FY 2024-25 Strategic Priority Project List.

Describe your involvement in
school activities
At school, I'm a big part of the softball team. I play shortstop, and I'm hoping to be the captain next year. I also participate in multiple clubs, like AAPI and the Feminism Club. Additionally, I'm the co-president of the Filipino America Student
Association.

Describe any work or
volunteer experience you
have
I worked at a summer camp last summer, which I loved. I had gone there as a kid and worked there as a CIT, so it was an awesome experience. I also do some volunteer opportunities with my church, like making sandwiches for homeless shelters.

I've also done multiple beach clean-ups, some with my school and also one with the youth council!
Describe any leadership
experience
I'm one of the co-presidents of the Filipino American Student Association. I'm also planning to apply for the AAPI board, and I am likely going to become a co-captain of my softball team by my senior year.

Why are you interested in
joining the Youth
Commission?
I was part of the youth council 2 years ago and really enjoyed my time there. Since I go to school outside of Malibu, the youth council created an opportunity for me to connect with the local community and help to give back to it. I was looking forward to joining again the following year but, unfortunately, had a mix-up and missed the opportunity. On the bright side, the mishap made me even more excited to reapply this year!
Meeting Schedule
If you have any prior commitments that may prevent you from attending Youth Commission meetings, please list them below. The Youth Commission meets at 7:00 p.m. on the 1st Thursday of each month, September through June. All Commissioners are expected to attend monthly meetings, special events, and participate in community service projects. Per the Youth Commission absence policy, Commissioners may miss a maximum of three meetings in a twelve-month period before their seat is vacated.

Describe your involvement in
school activities
For the last three years, I’ve been a part of the Malibu High School volleyball team. Both my sophomore and junior year, we won the Citrus Coast league title. During the spring season, we have practice everyday, games twice a week, and often host weekend tournaments to raise money for our school’s sports programs. While highschool volleyball may only take place in the spring, the whole team also plays for the Malibu Volleyball Club during off-season in order to prepare. Additionally, I’m a part of our Associated Student Body. I help plan events for the school like dances, spirit weeks, pep rallies, and publicize the events to gather more student participants.

Describe any work or
volunteer experience you
have
Last summer, I went on a service trip to Fiji. While there, we painted a church for the local community and spent time with the children, entertaining them and teaching them the game of volleyball. We also handed out clothing to those in need and cleaned up trash on the local beaches. Back home, I also volunteer at the homeless shelter in Los Angeles, preparing and handing out food. We spend time with those who come in in order to show them that their circumstances don’t define who they are.

Describe any leadership
experience
As I’ve been a member of ASB, I currently hold the cabinet position of treasurer. I plan out budgets for the student body and ensure that different events will be funded like dances and decorations for all events that ASB plans for the student body.

As treasurer, the ASB class relies on me to manage our funds. I also manage the money that goes in and out of our accounts in regard to outside sources by passing purchase orders and meeting with our official school account manager.

Why are you interested in
joining the Youth
Commission?
I want to join the Youth Commission because I believe that it’s important to have community events. Being involved in different school activities, I’ve seen firsthand how events bring the community together. By joining the Youth Commission, I hope to do the same not just for my school but for the Malibu city as a whole. Especially with the recent natural disasters that occurred, I can’t think of a more necessary time to foster togetherness for everyone. I hope to help plan new recreational activities for the public that can bring all families affected by the fires together and show that in such a heartbreaking time, they are not alone.

Meeting Schedule
If you have any prior commitments that may prevent you from attending Youth Commission meetings, please list them below. The Youth Commission meets at 7:00 p.m. on the 1st Thursday of each month, September through June. All 13 Commissioners are expected to attend monthly meetings, special events, and participate in community service projects. Per the Youth Commission absence policy, Commissioners may miss a maximum of three meetings in a twelve-month period before their seat is vacated.

Describe your involvement in
school activities
Since beginning high school, I have sought opportunities to integrate into my school communities and challenge myself academically. In my freshman year of high school, I was an active member of the Debate Team, which fostered my interest in public speaking and critical thinking while encouraging me to be open to a variety of perspectives. I transferred to Malibu High School at the beginning of my Sophomore Year. This shift was difficult for me, but I was honored to be recognized as the Student of the Month in my first month at school. After finding my footing in a new environment, I took the initiative to cofound both the Chemistry Club and the Math Club at Malibu High School, combining my love for school with a desire to build a supportive environment for my peers. These clubs will begin next year, and I am thrilled to continue to develop my involvement in my new school.

Describe any work or
volunteer experience you
have
Throughout my first two years of high school, I have been deeply committed to service and creating meaningful change in my community. As a member of the Friends of the Semel Teen Advisory Council, I took part in organizing this year’s Wellness Summit. The Wellness Summit was a program hosted by UCLA to promote mental health in the community, emphasizing youth well-being. I have been a part of the National Charity League since seventh grade, and my time as a member has given me the opportunity to contribute to service efforts throughout Los Angeles, from being the chair of the thrift store to organizing beach cleanups that combined community service with
knowledge on the importance of environmental consciousness.

Working at the thrift store truly expanded my understanding and empathy for others and my knowledge of the need for social responsibility. Through NCL, I was able to work closely with Para Los Niños in Downtown Los Angeles, a school
designed to protect and teach students whose families are struggling, working to end the disparities in access to both educational and fundamental resources for children in
underserved areas. I am fortunate enough to have been a person who has always had access to incredible education, and I believe that it should be accessible to all children.

Through the Volunteer Collective, I have found independent service opportunities throughout Los Angeles County, such as baking birthday cakes for children in foster care. Even small gestures can make such a significant impact on the lives of others. At my dance studio this past winter, I organized a fire relief program for the many team members and families who lost everything to the wildfires. I was able to use social media marketing to ensure those impacted received the support they needed, and hosted a drive with items donated by stores all over Malibu and Santa Monica. These experiences have both deepened my understanding of leadership and also shaped my 17 perspective on the impact of collective efforts on building a community.

Describe any leadership
experience
Leadership has been a meaningful part of my life, allowing me the ability to grow both personally and as a part of a
community. Through the National Charity League, I have taken on numerous leadership roles, such as serving as the Thrift Shop Chair, a position that required managing a retail store, coordinating donations, and organizing community events. At my dance studio, I have consistently taken on leadership roles even under challenging circumstances. After being sidelined by an injury, I focused on supporting my team by teaching classes for younger dancers, leading the summer program, and
ensuring the studio remained organized and productive by handling scheduling and community outreach. At Malibu High School, I founded the Chemistry and Math clubs, which will begin next year. Though I joined the school too late to pursue an official leadership position, I’ve taken on an unofficial role as a student leader, striving to set an example for my fellow students. These experiences have shaped my understanding of leadership, not only as a position but as an opportunity to support a community and build connections.

Why are you interested in
joining the Youth
Commission?
I am eager to join the Youth Commission because it provides the incredible opportunity to contribute to the community that has welcomed me so warmly. Having moved to a Malibu
school, with a mom who teaches at Pepperdine, I’ve
experienced so much support, and I want to give back. My passion for teen outreach aligns closely with the purpose of the Commission, and I believe in the necessity of creating
opportunities for young people to make a difference. I am deeply committed to environmental advocacy, and I hope to use this platform to promote community action to protect the beauty of Malibu. I understand the responsibility and the importance of the Youth Commission to bettering Malibu. My experience with public speaking has prepared me to
communicate ideas, inspire collaboration, and advocate for important causes. Joining the Youth Commission would allow me to combine my interests and skills to make a lasting impact.

Describe your involvement in
school activities
I have been an active member of the cheerleading team at Oaks Christian High School for the past three years and plan to continue during my Senior year. Cheerleading has allowed me to develop teamwork and time management skills, leadership abilities, and also help promote overall school spirit. I am also actively engaged with Yearbook at Oaks, and being an active member of this team has allowed me to use and strengthen my creative and writing skills, and also the opportunity to more deeply engage with our student body across various grades.

Additionally, I enjoy participating (and volunteering) in a wide variety of other school events throughout the school year, and engaging with fellow students to foster a positive and
supportive community at Oaks.

Describe any work or
volunteer experience you
have
I have had a part-time job at Starbucks in Malibu, which has helped me to build a strong sense of responsibility, work ethic, and effective time management skills. I have also been an active volunteer at the Walk-On-Water events in Malibu which provide surf therapy to children with physical and mental handicaps. I have also volunteered during Summers at the local Malibu preschool I attended - the California Ocean of Learning. These experiences have deepened my connection with the community and allowed me to support causes I care about.

Describe any leadership
experience
Serving on the Malibu City Council Youth Commission for the past three years has provided me with valuable leadership exposure and experience, and most importantly the opportunity to support and address key issues impacting the youth in our community. The Commission has also provided me the
opportunity to see and better understand what it takes to be an effective leader. I've had the opportunity to collaborate with fellow Youth Commissioners on a variety of topics and projects, and I feel these experiences have prepared me to serve in an increased leadership capacity going forward if I am fortunate enough to be selected to remain on the Youth Commission.

Additionally, my role as a cheerleader at Oaks has allowed me to lead by example and motivate my peers both on and off the field.

Why are you interested in
joining the Youth
Commission?
I am passionate about serving my local Malibu community and advocating for the voices of local youth. Over the past three years, I have gained increased insight into the needs of young people in Malibu and hope to continue making a positive impact through the Youth Commission. I believe my experience and dedication will allow me to contribute even more in the upcoming year.

3 Describe your involvement in
school activities
Firstly at Oaks I have been playing varsity tennis for four years, and I am very passionate about the sport. I also love to surf and am a part of the surf club/team at school. I am involved with quite a few clubs-business, investing, wellness, and pickleball to name a few, and I also am the founder of the tennis club. I am a part of the National Honors Society as well as the global leadership institute where I take a certain set of courses to improve leadership and work on a senior capstone project aimed at bettering my community. Finally I am a tutor at the international dorms on campus where I tutor my peers specifically in English and History.

Describe any work or
volunteer experience you
have
I have been working at Vintage Grocers for over 2 years, mainly bagging groceries and stocking shelves, which has been a great life experience. Volunteer wise, I have found a passion for tutoring those in need, and work with an online program called Engin to teach Ukranian kids English. As mentioned earlier I also am a tutor at my school and volunteer at the international dorms where I help international students in their English and History courses.

Describe any leadership
experience
Being in Oaks Christian's Global Leadership institute for 3 years has grown my skills in all aspects of leading through awesome courses and seminars, and has given me the tools to take action in my community with my capstone project. I am focusing on the negative impact the palisades fires have had on the ocean, and I'm leading a movement for Oaks students to participate in service with me. I also am a founder of the Oaks Christian Tennis club and am in the process of organizing a charity tennis tournament to raise money for the same cause.

Why are you interested in
joining the Youth
Commission?
I am interested in joining the youth commission because I am very passionate about civic engagement and service. I've loved being a part of the group the last 3 years and it has given me the opportunity to participate in more service here locally in Malibu and meet awesome new people. If I am able to rejoin for a final year I would be super happy as it has been a great experience so far.

Describe your involvement in
school activities
I often find myself working with peers to schedule and organize different groups in an activity. I like communicating with others so that, even if I can't help them directly, I can make sure they are working cohesively and concisely together. If I have experience in an activity, I go out of my way to make sure that others with less experience are up to date and ready for what the activity demands of them.

Describe any work or
volunteer experience you
have
I collaborated with our high school librarian to photocopy and save very old regional yearbooks into our archives by hand. I took the role of the lighting operator for my school's middle school program, which involved managing lighting cues for rehearsals and performances. I just recently started managing the lights for the new high school theater program and have gone to a few rehearsals there. I also played the viola at events in Pepperdine and with the Emily Shane Foundation, often in orchestral form with other willing students in my class.

Describe any leadership
experience
I often fill in for my calculus BC teacher when she is
unavailable or needing to focus on a few people, which usually involves scheduling topics, managing time, and actually teaching the topics in class. This extends to after school where I tutor people in the library or online via facetime. I was also the official timer for my high school's mock trial team last year, mostly helping the other attorneys with timing challenges and general advice. I was the pretrial attorney last season (which initiates the court trial) and got as high as top 8 in California.

This mostly consisted of communicating with others about case strategy and meet up schedules. I played as the section leader for my school's orchestra when we went to Carnigie hall for a recital, and mostly consisted of setting bowings, fingerings, dynamics, phrasing, etc. I am currently organizing a seminar for 3D printer usage for middle school students interested in using our school's 3D printers, and would be helping them with training.

Why are you interested in
joining the Youth
Commission?
I am really looking to spread my connections and learn a lot more about being a leader. My high school is not a very big school, so meeting with leaders that have had a lot more on their plate would be particularly helpful to me and my situation.

Also, these other leaders have been through challenges I might have to face in the future, so what better way that to learn to be around them while they overcome these challenges. I am sure that there are much better leaders than me in the Youth commission, so I am excited to push myself out of my comfort zone and figure out what being a leader demands from me.

Describe your involvement in
school activities
Ever since 6th grade, I have been critically involved in my school's Theater Arts program. I was the head of the stage and medical crew in my 6th grade production of "The Little
Mermaid", and focused on ensuring both the safety and
smoothness of the show. I would often communicate with the lighting tech and stage managers to figure out staging, blackouts, and lighting malfunctions, and even worked the curtain. However, as the rest of my time in middle school and high school progressed, I became more involved with the performing aspect of Theatre Arts, being in musicals such as The Lion King, Mean Girls, and SpongeBob the Musical, as well as plays like John Lennon & Me and Noses Off. Now, I am in our current production, The Addams Family, as one of the Addams ancestors. Taking part in both being a member of stage crew to a performer onstage has enabled me to
recognize both sides of the "theatre world", and how each person plays an individual role which contributes to an overall, successful outcome. Outside of Theater, however, I am a participating member of both the "ZAMNI" Club and the "Love For Our Elders" clubs. In the ZAMNI club, we work together to support the women of Haiti by selling the baskets created by them, which are to publicize the struggles that these women face, while also funding the necessities needed to survive like a well, which generates clean water, multiple ambulances, and shelter. In the Love For Our Elders clubs, we craft individual, handmade letters for each elder who has suffered the loss of their senior facility: The Terraces at Park Marino, to the Eaton Fire. Our goal in the club is to invoke a sense of hope and reassurance to these individuals to assure them that we are here for them in times of need.

Describe any work or
volunteer experience you
have
It is through my deepest efforts in which I try to volunteer or work at any facility when given the opportunity. Recently, I assisted with running the snack shack during Malibu Middle School's Cheer & Dance Competition, where ten different schools competed and showcased performances centric
around different genres of music like pop and hip-hop. I helped display a variety of different snacks and handled the money box, where I tallied up the total money spent, figured out the amount of change that was owed, and kept track of each
purchaser and the source of payment that they used. This opportunity also allowed me to connect with families across Malibu and Los Angeles, where I was able to share my own background, while also inquiring about their own. In addition, I also helped with running my old elementary school, Webster Elementary School, and their Prom. I found myself hopping around to different stations like popcorn and cotton candy making, running games, and making bracelets out of beads and gems. This occasion permitted me to be constantly aware 66 about different factors of an event, and I even chimed in with my own thoughts and ideas as to how to make these stations enjoyable for the participants. For the whole night, I got to speak with the younger generation of kids and watch them enjoy themselves just like I would when I used to be enrolled in Webster Elementary. I've also participated in a variety of different beach cleanup activities on Zuma Beach, which made me recognize the amount of litter and how it has had a major, devastating impact on our environment. It has caused me to become more aware of my own trash, and made me consider ways to avoid using environment-harming materials like plastic and styrofoam.

Describe any leadership
experience
I served as a production assistant for Power to the Patients' recent Super Bowl commercial. As a production assistant, I made sure that everything was running smoothly behind the scenes and that everyone - both behind the scenes and actors - were comfortable. I assisted with whatever task the director assigned me with, and ensured the safety and organization of the set. Given that this was a professional opportunity, I got to really embrace myself in an environment that I hadn't been in before, which also helped me become more resilient and
independent when it came to managing solo tasks and
responsibilities. Additionally, I also assisted with a non profit organization that my dad works for, where I advocated for the mission of the organization and discussed event planning.

Why are you interested in
joining the Youth
Commission?
I am interested in joining the youth commission because I aspire to be involved in the choices that impact the younger generation. I would be collaborating with others who also want to organize events and programs centered around younger people. I would provide an input that would be beneficial toward this younger audience, while also ensuring the creation of activities and events that wouldn't just appeal to this younger generation, but for the city as a whole. I'd also love having the opportunity to collaborate with the fellow members of this commission, enabling opportunities for team building and collaborative planning. This chance would also help me gain a stronger understanding of how these events are enacted
through the efforts of not just one person, but many who pitch their own thoughts and ideas.

Describe your involvement in
school activities
I am involved in a variety of school-wide activities. During the fall, I dedicate my time to cheerleading and serving as a member of the Associated Student Body (ASB). Additionally, I actively participate in the theater program and have performed in musicals for the past five years. I am passionate about staying engaged and contributing to a positive and inclusive school community.

Describe any work or
volunteer experience you
have
I have participated in various community service activities, including beach clean-ups, volunteering at school-wide events on weekends, and assisting at City of Malibu events such as the annual Halloween celebration at Bluffs Park. Although I do not currently hold an official job, I have gained valuable experience working as a Production Assistant on set whenever my father has the opportunity to direct.

Describe any leadership
experience
As mentioned previously, I am a member of ASB (Associated Student Body), a commitment I have maintained since my
freshman year. I have served as Freshman Class President, then Sophomore Class President, and currently hold the
position of ASB Vice President. In this role, I help lead our class and organize events such as club fairs. I am truly grateful to be part of ASB, as it allows me to contribute meaningfully to our school community and support others whenever I can.

Why are you interested in
joining the Youth
Commission?
This year, I am interested in joining the Youth Commission because I hope to apply the leadership experience I have gained within my high school community to a broader setting. I am eager to contribute to meaningful initiatives beyond campus and to deepen my understanding of how I can continue to strengthen my leadership and communication skills.

Meeting Schedule
If you have any prior commitments that may prevent you from attending Youth Commission meetings, please list them below. The Youth Commission meets at 7:00 p.m. on the 1st Thursday of each month, September through June. Per the Youth Commission absence policy, Commissioners may miss a maximum of three meetings in a twelve-month period before their seat is vacated.

Activities that may prevent
you from attending

Describe your involvement in
school activities
I am very involved in my school activities both in my classes, electives and extracurriculars. In school I try my best to constantly keep my high grades, care about my work, be
engaged in my classes, and overall I just love school! I'm currently in the High School Orchestra as an 8th grader. I am in theater and recently played the lead role of Belle, in our Middle School's production of the musical Beauty & the Beast Jr. I am also learning and taking Spanish in school. Currently I am on two club sports teams, including volleyball and swim team. I take all of my commitments very seriously and always put in the extra work.

Describe any work or
volunteer experience you
have
Although my experience may be limited at this time, during my middle school career, I have helped out and volunteered for Malibu Middle School's Year Book Club and at the High
School's water polo games. When I was a part of the Yearbook Club we would take photos of people for certain events and help put them in the yearbook. It was a really fun experience and I would love to do it again! Along with that, I have also helped out a bit at the snack shack at my high schools water polo games. Although I don't have a lot of experience with work or volunteering, I am really hopeful that this could be my chance to do just that and I am really excited to try it out and make a difference.

Describe any leadership
experience
Being in theater throughout my whole middle school career I have had many opportunities to take on certain leadership roles. During both our main musicals of the year or our own student directed plays, I have had times where I was able to become a leader and help out with others. It could be setting up how we want to perform the play, how to act out a scene, where props go, keeping people on track, or even just guiding my cast mates through it all. Through theater I have really been able to have a voice and a say in things. I have had the opportunity to really become a leader and work on my
leadership skills with others. Along with that, it has provided me with confidence and given me the opportunity to make new friends and work with others I wouldn't usually be working with.

If I am able to join this youth commission I would then be able to use this new skill set to my advantage and better contribute to the team. Theater has really been a great experience for me and I wouldn't trade it for anything, especially now that it has given me the necessary skills needed for this youth
commission.

Why are you interested in
joining the Youth
Commission?
When I first heard about this commission I was so excited! Right away I knew that this was for me. This is what I wanted to do. I really want to be able to make a difference and do something that matters. I want to help give back to my
community, coordinate and set up events, work with fellow 75 students, help with services, really do something that matters and so much more! By joining the Youth Commission I would also be able to work on many different skills such as
leadership, working with others, and being more involved.

Overall, having the opportunity to join the Youth Commission is so very exciting and would be a great experience! Thank you for taking the time to read this and I appreciate your
consideration!

Describe any leadership
experience
Currently I am an Ambassador for my High School. I have been a Zuma Beach JG Lifeguard Squad leader for the past two summers and hope to continue for summer 2025
Why are you interested in
joining the Youth
Commission?
I am interested in continuing my involvement with the Harry Barovsky Youth Commission for the 2025-2026 academic year.

When I saw the youth involvement in the skate park and swim team decisions, I thought having youth input in decisions that affect us was a great idea. That is when I first found the Harry Barovsky Youth Commission. The important work of the 2024- 2025 youth commission was interrupted by both the Franklin and Palisades fires. At this time of crucial rebuilding, the youth commission is needed more than ever. I want to be a decisive part of decision aking concerning our city with other Malibu teens.

As a first grader, I spoke at a city council meeting regarding pesticide use in our parks, and my mamá and I spoke to other moms and kids about it. It was a good feeling knowing our concerns were heard and taken seriously, and thankfully change was made. Being an active part of the city through the youth commission has been an invaluable life lesson and, more importantly, one that develops future active residents (which I plan to be) that I hope to continue.

As someone who is also very concerned about our
environment, I would like to maintain a focus on keeping our city, ocean, and beaches clean, especially in the aftermath of the fires. As a lifelong Malibu resident I know that the environmental decisions we make now will affect our future.

The youth are the stewards of our future, and we have the power to do great things if we put our minds to it. So it only makes sense to be involved with other Malibu teens who care through the Commission.

This past year, my fellow commissioners and I were able to 79 organize some events for the city youth, but unfortunately the fires derailed our plans. And now more than ever we need to reach out to all Malibu youth to bridge the gap in involvement.

Hopefully, we can organize more activities that bring teens from different geographical ends of the city together as well as have an active voice in the outreach and rebuilding process.

I would like to keep brainstorming and organizing with other city teens about community programs in which we as teen
residents can participate. I have many more ideas to share if I am again selected for the youth commission. I want to continue being an active resident and participate in decision making about our city and community and the youth commission gives me the opportunity to continue being an active member of my community.

Describe your involvement in
school activities
I am in the theater elective, and just played the lead role in the middle school play. I hope to be more involved in school events, when I get into 8th Grade.

I am a member of CJSF, and hope to maintain a high standard each year so I can attend the yearly school field trip.

Describe any work or
volunteer experience you
have
I have helped Arts Angels sell concessions and tickets at several of the school performances. I volunteered at the Malibu Education Foundation Christmas Tree lot, and community
night. Helping set up the tent, hang lights and decorations, as well as water the trees.

Describe any leadership
experience
As the lead in the school play, I helped support the theater teacher during rehearsals and the 5 performances of Beauty and the Beast, helping with the sets and scene changes, keeping the props organized side of Stage, and helping other students with fast costume changes. I also set up a Dungeons & Dragons club at school, and DM'd my own campaign.

I would like to be a Director, and have written and directed some scenes that my theater class have performed, as well as a film camp I attended last winter, that required me to work in a small group and lead the creative direction.

Why are you interested in
joining the Youth
Commission?
I love Malibu, and would like to take a more active roll in youth activities here, particular relating to the arts.

Meeting Schedule
If you have any prior commitments that may prevent you from attending Youth Commission meetings, please list them below. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended action.

STRATEGIC PRIORITY: This item is part of the day-to-day operations identified in the Adopted FY 2024-25 Strategic Priority Project List.

DISCUSSION: On April 28, 2025 Pete Weger resigned from his position on the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Advisory Committee (Committee). The Committee includes representatives of local governments from jurisdictions in the Stanta Monica Mountains, including the City of Malibu. With this change in scheduling, the Council may appoint a Councilmember as the City’s representative on the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Advisory Committee.

Pursuant to Government Code Section 54974, a notice of unscheduled vacancy was posted on May 22, 2025. The Council may make its appointment at this time.
