Physical activity through water play is paramount in the battle against youth obesity in a poor community such as San Bernardino during the hot summer months, where swim opportunities and facilities are limited.

Please provide an overview of the project Family Swim Passes: The swim pass program will provide the activities and explain how the project will opportunity for low income residents to attend a second swim session address the identified Community Health of recreation swim (open swim) each day, Monday through Sunday Need. Operatior
Splash in San Bernardino will provide low-cost access via a pass for a minimum of 180 qualifying low-income families (average 5 members per family) to the all San Bernardino public pools from May through August 2024-2026. This access is intended to increase the amount of daily physical play activity children especially receive, improving fitness by burning calories, reducing body weight levels, and reduce the propensity for chronic disease development such as for diabetes, asthma, and hypertension. Other benefits include relief from the summer heat and interaction with other community members in a safe and fun environment, strengthening the family bond and improving the City through neighborly community building and inter-generational activity. Learn-To-Swim: The Learn-to-Swim program will provide the opportunity for youth ages 6-17 years to attend any of the four two- week swimming lessons sessions beginning in June at the start of Summer Break at any of San Bernardino public pools. Each session will have a minimum of three classes ranging in size of 5-10 students Monday through Thursday, for 30 minutes each day's instruction. Through effective teaching of swimming skills development by certified swim instructors, participants will have gained valuable water safety skills to aid in minimizing death due to drowning.

Participants are also expected through sustained physical activity (many times the only physical activity available while on School Summer Break) and a comprehensive water play plan (use their swim passes as often as possible) to improve overall health and fitness.

Access to other water play facilities is expected as skills advance. An overall increase in leisure-time physical activity behavior will not only reduce risk factors for chronic diseases but will also decrease deviant youth behavior (truancy, violence, graffiti, vandalism, gang involvement, drug use). Junior Lifeguard Program: The Junior Lifeguard Program will provide those ages 9-15 years the opportunity to participate in our two 4-week sessions during the Summer (June & July) at our Jerry Lewis Family Swim Center. Each session will serve 10-15 students in a 2-hour daily
program both in and out of the water, held four days a week, M-Th.

Under the guidelines of the American Red Cross Junior Lifeguard Program, students will learn how to prevent aquatic accidents, improve personal fitness and swimming skills, respond to water emergencies, develop leadership skills, and prepare for a professional lifeguard job as part of healthy living habits. Access to other water play facilities and activities is expected as skills advance and self confidence is developed. An overall increase in leisure-time physical activity behavior will not only reduce risk factors for chronic diseases but will also decrease deviant youth behavior (truancy, violence, graffiti, vandalism, gang involvement, drug use). ReThink Your Drink Campaign: The State of California's ReThink Your Drink brand, which promotes the reduction of sugary drinks in our diets, will be marketed to the community, especially the aquatics audience, in a variety of ways. RYD literature will be made
available to all pool patrons at San Bernardino public pool locations during the summer
swim season (May-June). Over a dozen banner postings and other related healthy living literature. Long-term promotional items such as water bottles, backpacks, etc., will be handed out at the end of each swimming lessons session during a 5-minute drink comparison demonstration to each registered
participant and their families as well as at other community events. All starting with our Operation Splash, Water Safety Challenge kickoff event the weekend leading up to Memorial Day weekend, the official kickoff of summer. Library Summer Reading Program, and Water Play Days. A Beverage Exchange Program will be available to those who Jerry Lewis Family Swim Center to not only the aquatics audience but also low income Youth/Teen Empowerment participants, who will serve as good role models for their peers and younger siblings, and the Summer Reading Program participants.
