PROCLAMATION OF

THE MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL
PROCLAIMING JUNE 16-22, 2025, AS

JUNETEENTH WEEK

IN THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO
WHEREAS, Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day and Emancipation Day, marks the historic moment on June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation; and
WHEREAS, Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and stands as a powerful symbol of African American freedom, resilience, and achievement; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Bernardino honors the significant contributions of African Americans to the history, culture, and progress of our city and nation; and WHEREAS, Juneteenth provides an opportunity to celebrate freedom, reflect on our nation’s history, and recommit to the ongoing work of equality, justice, and community unity.
