Trademark Registration for Discover San Fernando".

The City of San Fernando launched Discover San Fernando in September 2025 and plans to use it for marketing and promotional materials to showcase local businesses, events, and community assets. To protect the this phrase and ensure its exclusive association with the City, it is recommended that the City pursue formal trademark registration. Securing the trademark will present unauthorized use by outside entities, preserve the City's brand identity, and strengthen our ongoing efforts to promote economic development and community pride under a unified and recognizable banner.

It is recommended that the City Council discuss and approve initiating the process to trademark the name of "Discover San Fernando," and direct staff to take the necessary steps to file for trademark protection on behalf of the City.

Consideration of Support for the Request to Honor Charles White, 1979 Heisman Trophy Winner and San Fernando High School Alumnus
The family of Charles White, a 1979 Heisman Trophy winner and proud alumnus of San Fernando High School, has submitted a request seeking recognition for his athletic achievements and inspirational legacy. Mr. White, a native of the San Fernando Valley, remains a symbol of perseverance, commitment, and excellence whose story continues to inspire generations in the communities of San Fernando, Pacoima, and beyond.

The request, submitted by Dr. Roosevelt White and James Gorden on behalf of the White family, asks that Charles White’s name be added alongside Kevin Williams’ name on the gymnasium building and add his name to the football field at San Fernando High School. The family believes this tribute would serve as a lasting acknowledgment of his accomplishments, from his beginnings as a San Fernando High School athlete to his collegiate career at the University of Southern California and professional career in the National Football League.

While decisions regarding school naming rest with the Los Angeles Unified School District, the family is seeking the City’s support and formal acknowledgment of Charles White’s contributions to the San Fernando community and his lasting impact as a role model for current and future students.

It is recommended that the City Council discuss and consider issuing a formal letter of support for the White family’s request to recognize Charles White by placing the name on the wall of the gymnasium and adding his name to the San Fernando High School football field in his honor, and direct staff to prepare and transmit such correspondence to the appropriate representatives of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Mary Mendoza Mayor
Accept Donation of Eight Air Purifiers through Veterans Support Initiative and Alicia Broadous Duncan Multi-Purpose Senior Center
The City of San Fernando has been offered a generous donation of eight air purifiers from the Veterans Support Initiative (VSI), in collaboration with the Alicia Broadous-Duncan Multipurpose Senior Center.

This thoughtful contribution aims to enhance the health and well-being of San Fernando residents by improving indoor air quality in their homes. Air purifiers play a vital role in removing airborne particles such as dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and mold spores — common triggers for asthma, allergies, and other respiratory conditions.

Through this donation, the Veteran Support Initiative and the Alicia Broadous-Duncan Multipurpose Center aim to provide comfort, relief, and cleaner air for those who need it most, reinforcing our shared commitment to creating a healthier and more supportive environment for all community members.

It is recommended that the City Council discuss and formally accept the donation of eight air purifiers, authorize staff to coordinate with the Resource Center to determine resident eligibility, and direct that the distribution be managed in partnership with Ms. Gail Wilson. ✔

Dear Mary and Kanika,
I trust that you both are doing well. Here is the context for our donation of eight air purifiers on Friday afternoon.

Veterans Support Initiative and the Alicia Broadous Duncan Multipurpose Senior Center are honored to donate air purifiers to support the health and well-being of residents in the City of San Fernando. These purifiers help remove airborne irritants such as dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and mold spores -- common triggers for asthma and other respiratory conditions. We hope that this contribution provides comfort, relief, and improved air quality for community members who need it most.

Thank you.

Ms. Gail Wilson
