membertate reasons for why you want to become a member of this committe, including what specific objectives you would be working toward as a I have lived in Santa Clara for over 20 years. Three years ago, I moved to the Old Quad area. I believe a positive relationship between SCU and the nearby residents is important. I would like to facilitate more interaction and communication between the two. One example that comes to mind is alerting neighbors when there are activities of interest such as sporting events, theater productions, music events, etc.

Please state reasons for why you want to become a member of this committee, including what specific objectives you would be working toward as a member:

I have lived in this community for over 10 years, beginning when I myself was only one year out of college. think the relationship between the universitv. its students, and the residents of this neighborhood is very unique and have experienced both positive and negative aspects of that. I would like to become a member of this committee because l care about the community, culture, and well-being of our neighborhood--our neighborhood which includes, not just surrounds, the university and the students living off campus. As someone who as driven on the streets filled with shattered bottles and heard the sorority rush week chants from my couch, I want to be a part of the committee to offer a perspective on what issues are nuisances versus threats to peace and safety. One specific objective I would work towards as a member of this committee is to create a greater sense of belonging and investment in the community among the SCU students. Fostering this shared commitment would have students and residents working towards ine same goals of mutual care for the neighborhood and quality of life within it. I think landlords can and should play a large role in the culture and expectations they set when leasing out property to students but often the landlords are even more disconnected from the community and neighborhood than the students are. Another objective would be to open more formal and informal avenues of communication between neighbors (that do not involve police or code enforcement) and ensure that the students are firstly viewed as neighbors rather than nuisances.

believe that we have an opportunity to create a collaborative and engaged relationship between Santa Clara University and the City of Santa Clara and specifically with the neighbors surround the SCU camous. Over the past 10 vears. SCU nas taken multiple steps to address the impacts of the growth of SCU working with neighbors such as myself. There is more to be done however. Ibelieve we need a Neighborhood University Relations Committee that addresses and mitigates the impacts of SCU on our neighborhoods and plans together for future growth and development in the immediate area around SCU.
