I am pleased to convey support for the SaMo2 Beach Dune Restoration Project. The goal of this project is to restore a section of Santa Monica’s existing beach into a sustainable coastal strand and foredune habitat resilient to sea level rise.

As one of the first cities to adopt a comprehensive Sustainable City Plan, Santa Monica has proven to be a leader in developing policies and programs to maximize environmental benefits and eliminate negative environmental impacts. Adopted in 2019, the City’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan sets goals to enhance natural systems to prevent damage from coastal flooding and increase resilience of public and private assets in the coastal flood zone.

Beach nourishment and dune creation has been identified in the CAAP as a priority action to achieve the City’s coastal resilience goals.

The SaMo2 beach dune restoration project directly ties to the City’s coastal adaptation and resilience goals. This project will foster collaboration between various stakeholders to balance the City’s priorities of maintaining coastal access and implementing low-cost natural solutions to improve resilience to sea level rise. I encourage California Coastal Commission’s support to ensure the success of the SaMo2 Beach Dune Restoration Project.

Sincerely,
Dean Kubani
Chair, Commission on Sustainability, Environmental Justice, and the Environment
