DearCouncilmember Anaheim Public Comment andMayor,
OnMay16, youareslated tocertify thepetition toadopt anordinance which would drastically impact hotels throughout theCityofAnaheim. Theinitiative claims tosupport workers, butinreality itwillhurtlocal businesses, employees, andneighborhood services.
Hotels throughout Anaheim, andespecially intheAnaheim Resort area, areresponsible forgenerating nearly 58% ofthecity’sgeneral fund revenue. According tothecity’sownestimate, Anaheim Resort hotels will generate $172million for2022-2023. Those dollars arecritical tofunding Anaheim services suchasparks and recreation, maintaining andrepairing roads andinfrastructure, community andsenior services, andthepublic safety services likepolice andfirethatAnaheim residents relyon.
Theproposed regulations willbedevastating forthehospitality industry inAnaheim. Preliminary estimates suggest thatthecostofhousekeeping could tripleorevenquadruple, meaning hotels would beforced toraise theirrates toafford increased costs – smaller, family runhotelswillbethemostatrisk. Thisinitiative willdrive tourism outofAnaheim andresidents andbusinesses willpay theprice.
TheAnaheim Convention Center isalready facing intense competition fromrivalconvention destinations like LosAngeles, SanDiego, andLasVegas. Thismeasure willforcetheConvention Center toincrease operating costs – making itmoredifficult toattract trade shows andconventions suchasNAMM andNatural Products.
Families looking tovacation intheAnaheim Resort areawillbefacedwithincreased costsatatimewhen inflation andthecostoflivingisskyrocketing – meaning theywillbelesslikely tochoose ourcityasavacation destination. TheResort areaistheeconomic engine ofourcity, andthismeasure threatens toputbusinesses intheareaout ofcommission. Developers andhoteliers willlook elsewhere toinvest andAnaheim willbefacedwitha shortfall ofbusiness development.

Mayor andMembers oftheCityCouncil,
Iamwriting toaskthatyoutodirectCityStafftodoComprehensive Impact Analysis oftheItem19 - Hotel and Event Center minimum Wage, Worker Retention andHotelWorker Safety andWorkload Initiative before taking action ontheProposed Initiative.
IwasontheBudget Commission fortenyears andknowhowimportant theresort areahotels, Convention Center andevent centers aretotheannual CityBudget. ThisInitiative may haveasignificant negative impact toCityrevenues ifadopted bydriving uptheoperating costtooperate theConvention Center andhotels throughout Anaheim. Ifthecosttoholdconventions andrentrooms goesupasaresultofthisInitiative, conventions willmovetolower costlocations andtheTOTfrom hotels willbereduced astravelers findless expensive accommodations inothercities. Theimpact would definitely hitPublicSafety asthePolice andFire Budget isover70% oftheGeneral Fund.
Icantellyoufrompersonal experience asamember oftheAmerican Institute ofAeronautics andAstronautics AIAA) andtheSAEInternational thatwhere tohold aconference iscostdriven andaverycompetitive environment between cities thathaveconvention facilities. Thecosttolargecorporations thatparticipate, sponsor andexhibit atamajor conference caneasily runwellover $500,000. When costsgoupwithnoadded value, professional organizations lookforotherlocations tomaintain/increase participation asthisisamajor source oftheirannual revenue.
Thisproposed Initiative byUniteHereLocal 11seeks totakecontrol oflocalbusinesses bymandating wage increases andestablishing newregulations under theguise ofworker safety. Inreality allitwilldoisinflate prices beyond market rates, destroy small business owners thatmust comply withthenewregulations, and reduce employment asconventions/travelers movetolower costlocations, alongwithnegatively impacting City revenues.

Re: Residential Can Service P/ U
First, let me say Republic Industries does a good job of collecting.
But they are the only service we have ever had. No one to compare it to.
Is there any way to get additional quotes from other companies? Republic has been the only service here for all surrounding Cities.
Can we get quotes from the following:
C R & R
Ware Disposal
Park Disposal
I would like to see if there would be any difference.
And why do we pay to recycle when the Disposal company gets the revenue? Thank you for your time.

When verysmall children gethooked ontablets andsmartphones, saysAric Sigman, anassociate fellowoftheBritishPsychological Society andaFellow of Britain’sRoyalSociety ofMedicine, theymayunintentionally hindertheirstilldeveloping brains. Toomuchscreen timetoosoon, hesays, “istheverything impeding thedevelopment oftheabilities thatparents aresoeagertofoster through thetablets. Theability tofocus, toconcentrate, tolendattention, to sense otherpeople’sattitudes andcommunicate withthem, tobuildalarge vocabulary—allthose abilities areharmed.”
Putmoresimply, parents whojumptoscreen timeinabidtogivetheirkidsan educational edgemayactually bedoingmoreharmthangood—andtheyneedto doleoutfuture screen timeinanage-appropriate matter. Between birthandage three, forexample, ourbrains develop quickly andareparticularly sensitive to theenvironment around us. Inmedical circles, thisiscalled thecritical period, because thechanges thathappen inthebrain during thesefirsttender years become thepermanent foundation uponwhich alllaterbrainfunction isbuilt. In orderforthebrain’sneural networks todevelop normally during thecritical period, achildneeds specific stimuli fromtheoutside environment. These are rulesthathave evolved overcenturies ofhuman evolution, but—notsurprisingly— theseessential stimuli arenotfound ontoday’stablet screens.
Muchoftheissuelieswiththefactthatwhatmakes tablets andiPhones so great—dozens ofstimuli atyourfingertips, andtheability toprocess multiple actions simultaneously—isexactly what young brains donotneed.
Tablets aretheultimate shortcut tools: Unlike amother reading astorytoachild, forexample, asmartphone-toldstory spoon-feeds images, words, andpictures all atoncetoayoung reader. Ratherthanhaving totakethetimetoprocess a mother’svoiceintowords, visualize complete pictures andexertamental effort tofollowastoryline, kidswhofollowstories ontheirsmartphones maygetlazy.
Thedevice doesmuchofthethinking forthem.

Thebrain’sfrontal lobeisinvolved indecoding andcomprehending social interactions. Haveyoueverseenamother chuckle asherbabytriesto “swipe” areal photograph, orpunch theirfingers ontoaposter orbookasifitwerea touchscreen? Itmayseemcute, butitpoints tosomething muchdeeper inthe child’sbrain—aninternalization thatallactions haveanimmediate effect, andall stimuli elicitaquick response.
Thisistrueintheon-screen world, butnotelsewhere. When every finger swipe brings aboutaresponse ofcolors andshapes andsounds, achild’sbrain responds gleefully withtheneurotransmitter dopamine, thekeycomponent inour reward system thatisassociated withfeelings ofpleasure. Dopamine hitsinthe braincanfeelalmost addictive, andwhenachildgetstooused toanimmediate stimuliresponse, hemaylearntoprefer smartphone-styleinteraction—thatis, immediate gratification andresponse—overareal-worldconnection.

Despite therisks, therearealotofbenefits toletting littleonesusetechnology.
Onceachildisovertheageoftwo, feelfreetoallowlimited screen time—think anhour, max, ofplaying withtablets andiPhones each day—tohelpdevelop coordination, honequick reactions, andevensharpen language skills. Aswithall theothertoysandtoolsavailable toyourdeveloping child, smartphone use should stayinmoderation, andnever standinforhuman interaction orreal-world facetime.
