raised at our annual gala, Authors on the Move. We currently reach approximately 4000 students in the Twin Rivers and Sacramento City Unified School Districts. To expand our book giveaway efforts into the remaining 21 elementary schools we are applying for grants that fund the books and the staffing for the book giveaways. The Community Enhancement & Investment Fund Grant will reach 1650 kids in the Folsom Cordova and Sacramento City Unified School Districts and establish a relationship with Rancho Cordova. This grant helps us get closer to fulfilling our vision to put books in the hands and homes of every Title 1 student.

Research
Our work is routed in secondary research that has measured the impact of similar efforts. Research shows that reading five books is enough to hold onto previously achieved reading levels. Research shows that having books in the home is as important to a child’s education attainment as their parent’s education level and career level. And finally, research shows that mirrors (of oneself) and windows (into new worlds) are critical parts of developing a successful and confident reader.

Logistics
Generally, we try to find a site that is at least 30’x30’, in the geographic area of the schools we are serving and available for the 10 days before the books go to the schools. There, we sort the books by the curations for each grade. A previously agreed to time is established for each school site: in September that is usually Back to School Nights, and in May that is usually Open House. The school provides a list of kids that can be checked off as they are picked up. For the students who did not get a bag due to not attending, we put a tag on the bag with the students’ names and give them to teachers to give to kids the next day.

Tell us about your
Project/Program
Team
By April 1, 2024, our Foundation will introduce a full-time Program Manager, funded 50% by the Kelly Foundation, to oversee our book giveaways, working alongside current staff and integrating into our grants.

Collaborating with volunteer groups like Rancho Cordova Rotary and potentially Rotary Community Core, as well as Cordova Lancers Leaders and Legends - BIGS & Little’s Program, we'll ensure efficient distribution.

Our project team extends to nine selected schools, with established contacts ensuring their interest and participation. Sasha Kinney, District Librarian, plays a crucial role in our grant process and will be instrumental moving forward.

Goals
Our goal is to make sure we get the books in the hands and the homes of our most under-resourced kids. The research we rely on tells us that a bag of (5) high-quality diverse books in their home is directly linked to their future educational success. Our program is structured the way that it is, to make sure we meet all three goals: books in the home, 5 books for out of school time reading retention, books where the reader sees themselves and our data points us to the most under resourced kids.

The Literacy Foundation has developed the Sacramento County Literacy Map, a GIS mapping tool that measures students' reading proficiency by school site, school district, city municipality, and county. Every public elementary school in California who had 3rd graders take the CAASPP is on the map. This is an accessible data tool for the literacy community and a resource that details 3rd grade literacy outcomes by school site. Right now, truancy is one of the largest issues facing public schools. Truancy has doubled and even tripled, reaching rates as high as 45% in the most under resourced communities. We believe that children who can read are more likely to go to class because school becomes a place where they can succeed. We also believe we are helping schools to bring the kids back.

Describe any funding
secured or being
sought for this
project/program?
More broadly, we are working to reach Sacramento County’s most under resourced kids and we have funding proposals out to several groups.

Based on the last two years, we project we will generate funds, from private donors, at our annual gala for the 15 elementary school sites in the Promise Zone (SCUSD and TRUSD). We have promising responses from Sierra Health Foundation for 3 large schools in EGUSD, and from the RCA Community Fund for 4 schools in the SJUSD. We are applying to Sacramento County for 2 schools in unincorporated Sacramento County and the Promise Zone that we funded year one but not year two. Nearly every school included in our grants is at a Title I rate of over 90%.

For this specific project, our own organization is prepared to direct $25,000 in goods and services – a 7 to 1 match – toward this expansion.

Additionally, we have reached out to First 5 Sacramento and Anthem to see if they have an interest in financially partnering with us on this project.

First 5 has declined and we have not heard from Anthem as of the grant submission date.

This funding for students in Rancho Cordova would allow us to begin building relationships with FCUSD’ highest need schools and continue to build pathways to Sacramento County’s most under resources families.

For
projects/programs
that span multiple
years, please
describe your
sustainability plan
and whether it is
viable as a single
year request.

The program is viable as a single year program but of course would be more impactful as a multiyear program. Books in the home is proven to be a significant indicator of higher education attainment and we know that many under resourced families don’t have books in the home. The difference between a one year or multi year is the difference in the size of the home library created over time.

Adaptability: What is
your plan to complete
your project/program
should any
challenges arise?
This program first distributed 30,000 books to 4,000 kids in March of 2021 - during the COVID -19 lock down. Schools were holding classes virtually and getting materials to their students by scheduling drive-thru times for parents to pick up materials. We brought the books to the schools and the school staff gave the families the books at the next drive-thru. Our book giveaways, although rich in intervention, are simple. Minimally, it only requires us to get the books to the schools and help where needed to distribute them.

Dear FCUSD,
I am writing a letter of support for the Measure H - Community Enhancement and Investment Fund (CEIF) grant by the Sacramento Literacy Foundation (SLF).

For many years, SLF has been a keystone in delivering high-quality diverse books to low-income Sacramento County children. SLF carefully curates easy readers and pictures books for each population, ensuring the books reflect the residents SLF serves. Because these books are culturally responsive, the books in turn provide the confidence, motivation, and engagement that students need to continue to build a relationship with reading. SLF’s service also meets FCUSD’s LCAP goal 2, to “Increase parent and student engagement and provide a safe, healthy, and positive learning environment with an intentional focus on historically marginalized and the most vulnerable student populations.”
SLF is the local convener of the national Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. SLF actively partners with literacy agencies in Sacramento County, including 916 Ink, the Sacramento Public Library, the United Way, and many others. As FCUSD implements science of reading practices across grade levels, it is essential that we partner with community organizations such as SLF, as their services extend beyond the classroom. This provides families and students with a connection to literacy in their community, an essential ingredient in creating lifelong readers.

I encourage an endorsement of SLF for the CEIF grant so that students have access to high-quality, diverse material that inspires students to continue their path to the joy of reading.

Sincerely,
Sasha Kinney
District Librarian

Project/Program
Synopsis
Falkon Academy plans to cultivate STEM interest in 4th to 8th graders at W. E. Mitchell Middle School through an engaging Robotics program.

Designed to inspire curiosity, problem-solving, and teamwork, this initiative aims to lay the groundwork for a lasting passion for STEM subjects.

Provide a
Project/Program
Description
This project aims to create a STEM program to cultivate awareness about technology. The program plans to cater for 50 students in grades 4 to 8.

And we chose VEX IQ Robotics program as a medium to teach STEM. This program will be offered at W. E. Mitchell Middle School. And it will be open to kids from other schools near by. We've learned that shorter sessions work better for kids, so we've divided the program into two parts— Season Fall: September to December and Season Spring: January to April, with each season lasting 2 hours a week.

Our goal is to spark interest and excitement about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) among students. The program is architected like a camp where kids learn about robotics and compete in fun challenges. Teach the kids that technology is exciting and not to be intimidated about it.

In the previous year, our program was mainly promoted to students within the school cafeteria. Interested students then approached their parents to sign up. This year, our strategy is to first inform parents directly and let them decide whether they want to enroll their children. We plan to set up booths on parents' nights to showcase the exciting aspects of our program and encourage parents to actively engage. By involving parents, we aim to encourage them to understand and prioritize our program in their schedules.

Although W. E. Mitchell Middle School wanted to have a VEX robotics program in their STEM curriculum, it was never offered. Falkon Academy has successful programs in other middle schools, so we're stepping in to help. Our program is easy to understand, making it engaging for kids.

Our broader mission is to bring STEM education to everyone, especially those who might not have many opportunities. We've talked to Dr. Garcia, the principal at W. E. Mitchell Middle School, and she supports our project.

To make this happen, we need funding for three important things:

1. Staff Compensation: We want to make sure our instructors are paid for their hard work.

CITY OF RANCHO CORDOVA
FISCAL YEAR 2024/2025 GRANT APPLICATION

COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT & INVESTMENT FUND
“Bring STEM Education to the community in need.”
Project Name : W. E. Mitchell Middle VEX IQ Robotics Program Contact: Ashwin Thirunahari

Project Synopsis:

Falkon Academy plans to cultivate STEM interest in 4th to 8th graders at W. E. Mitchell Middle School through an engaging Robotics program. Designed to inspire curiosity, problem-solving, and teamwork, this initiative aims to lay the groundwork for a lasting passion for STEM subjects.

Project Description:

This project aims to create a STEM program to cultivate awareness about technology. The program plans to cater for 50 students in grades 4 to 8. And we chose VEX IQ Robotics program as a medium to teach STEM. This program will be offered at W. E. Mitchell Middle School. And it will be open to kids from other schools nearby.

We've also learned that shorter sessions work better for kids, so we've divided the program into two parts— Season Fall: September to December and Season Spring: January to April, with each season lasting 2 hours a week.

Although W. E. Mitchell Middle School wanted to have a VEX robotics program in their STEM curriculum, it was never offered. Falkon Academy has successful programs in other middle schools like Folsom Middle School, Marina Village Middle School and Pleasant Grove Middle School, so we're stepping in to help.

2. School Room Rental: This covers the cost of using a classroom at the school where kids can learn and have fun.

3. Scholarships and Incentives: We want to help students who may face financial challenges by offering scholarships by offering it as a free program. We'll also provide $50 incentive for attending 80% of the program - to keep kids excited about coming to the program.

In a nutshell, this project is about making STEM education fun and accessible for students at W. E. Mitchell Middle School. By bringing robotics to more kids, we hope to inspire a love for learning and set them up for success in the future.

Closing Comments:

As expressed in this document, there is a big need for STEM programs like robotics in our community. And with the rapid pace evolution of technology from Autonomous cars, Robotic Farming, Artificial Intelligence applications like ChatGPT, its more imminent than ever for our school systems to provide robotics educations besides regular curriculum. Unfortunately, technology based programs are expensive as the Staff and the kits are expensive. As such it is unreachable for low-income families. So funding is more imminent than ever to get these programs to such communities.

Let’s build the next generation work force together. And make Rancho Cordova hub of Robotics and New Tech.

The aim of this grant request is to offset the cost of transportation and adult chaperone expenses to reduce the total cost per student participant.

Provide a
Project/Program
Description
With the rising cost of transportation, field trips have become a serious expense for families and teaching staff alike. At the same time, our fondest memories and the best educational experiences are captured by field trip experiences, especially the 4th and 6th grade overnight science camp experiences, benchmarks in a young person's elementary school years. To help offset the cost to McGarvey Elementary students, families and staff we ask for grant support to help offset the total cost to participants.

The 4th grade overnight field trip allows students to study the history of local Gold Rush towns and nature which enriches understanding of California's Next Generation Science Standards and Environmental Principles & Concepts.

The 6th grade field trip is a week-long environmental education program that feature astronomy, California and local history and geography, and team building that includes hiking, shelter construction, and challenge activities. The trip supports students' academic, social and emotional growth, which enriches understanding of California's Next Generation Science Standards and Environmental Principles & Concepts.

Development trainings and classroom presentations to schools in the Folsom Cordova School District and other areas served by the City of Rancho Cordova. See attached for sample lesson plans, activities, assessments and rubrics.

We connect with the principals and schedule the in-service sessions, depending on time, availability and need. We are highly adaptable to meet the needs of the schools. This grant will allow us to meet with several local schools within the City of Rancho Cordova. Our plan would be to provide the initial free session and then, provide ongoing follow-up sessions at an affordable price.

Our sessions begin with community-building, story-telling and getting the participants out of their comfort zones through laughter and connection.

With 1 in 3 Americans reporting loneliness every week, according to the American Psychiatry Association (2024), these micro-moments of connection can alleviate hours of loneliness. The opposite of isolation is connection.

Throughout the sessions, participants will learn mental health facts, suicide prevention tips, meditation and mindfulness techniques, participate in team-building activities and create stronger community. Through the power of breath-work, slowing down and being present with each other, we can alleviate feelings of isolation which causes anxiety, depression and suicidal tendencies (Carter & Carter, 2016). We use the latest research in human developmental science and research-based activities.

Students and teachers will receive giveaways including journals, a book on mindfulness, calming stickers and teacher curriculum for future use.

We believe through story-telling, breath work and other mindfulness techniques, we can change the pattern of mental health struggles and teacher burn-out.

Currently, the Folsom Cordova School District provides Wellness Resources mostly online.

There are several opportunities for the students and parents to become aware of resources through Mental Health teams at the school. However, without knowledge of these online services and explanation of the how to utilize these services, many students and teachers fall through the cracks.

Calmness of Mind, LLC programs would supplement these efforts, with in-person, real-time trainings and educational sessions to provide both the educators and the students with the much needed in-person trainings. We believe through these in-person, ongoing community building sessions, we will see long term benefits. The benefits include mental health struggles alleviated for youth and their teachers, suicide ideation decreased, emotional awareness increased, fewer teachers and students feeling isolated, and an overall enhancement of community.

For more information on our services, feel free to view our promotional video. See attached link. In this short film, we visited two CARES classrooms at Mitchell Middle School. We provided fun and interactive ways to slow down the students’ busy lives and minds. Our sessions included an activity called “Can’t Hold All of the Cups” to become aware of all the stressors in their lives. See attached lesson plan. This activity created by the Founder and CEO of Calmness of Mind, LLC. is included in the teacher curriculum product. One CARES teacher participated in the meditation as well and both shared a great need for these trainings. Our giveaways included fruit snacks which we shared together to demonstrate mindfulness and how to become aware of our actions. The instructor, Nicki shared her life experience, struggling with her own thoughts of suicide at their age.

Please note this promotional video is in draft form and is in the process of being approved by Folsom Cordova School District.

Project/Program Team
The instructor and Founder of Calmness of Mind, LLC., Nicole (Nicki) Mehta, M.Ed. is a credentialed educator at Sacramento State with over 15 years educating youth and adults about suicide prevention, meditation, active listening, storytelling and self-development. For over 30 years, she struggled with suicide ideation and was bullied in her youth. As a woman of color, struggling with her own identity, meditation helped her to quiet her mind and lighten her heart. Nicki tells her story openly in these presentations to allow her participants to feel comfortable and to learn how to tell their own story of resilience.

Provide your
Project/Program Goals
Goals:

To educate and train educators on the value of meditation and mindfulness practices for their own stress levels.

To educate youth who are at-risk for mental health struggles and suicide ideation about meditation and mindfulness techniques to prevent further struggles.

To provide service learning trainings for educators in K-12 schools and community centers about how to practice meditation, mindfulness, communication, story-telling, active listening, and happiness.

To create curriculum and specific training to teachers about how to weave in meditation and mindfulness techniques inside their classrooms.

The metric system used will be the SWOT Analysis after each training session and for follow-up sessions in the schools and community centers. We will survey the teachers to determine the use of meditation in their own life and to determine if they are using the techniques in their classrooms regularly.

Lesson Seed: Stress
Reduction Exercise for
Middle School Students
Objective
By the end of this 52-minute lesson, students in grades 6-8 will be able to practice the "can't hold all of the cups" stress reduction exercise to promote relaxation and emotional well-being.

Prior Knowledge
Students should have prior knowledge of the effects of stress on the body and mind.

Cue Set 1: Think-Pair-Share

1. Ask students: "What are some common stressors in your life?"

2. In pairs, have students discuss their answers and come up with at least three examples each.

3. Ask a few pairs to share their examples with the whole class.

Cue Set 2: Visualization - CAN’T HOLD ALL OF THE CUPS exercise.

1. Ask students to close their eyes and take a deep breath.

2. Guide them through a visualization exercise where they imagine a cup for each stressor in their life.

3. Ask them to visualize attempting to hold all of the cups at once and how that might feel.

4. After a minute, ask students to open their eyes and reflect on their experience.

5. Ask for a volunteer to attempt to hold all of the cups. Have a set of pre-written stressors on about 20 cups. Have each student circle up around the volunteer. Ask each student to gently toss the cup to the volunteer who will need to hold all of the cups. They cannot stack the cups. They must hold them individually. Have the student as they are tossing it call out the stressor. Watch the student volunteer as they attempt to hold all of the cups and the cups fall to the ground. Allow the student to reflect on what it felt like to attempt to hold all of the cups.

Cue Set 3: Discussion
CEIF App #67
ITEM 3.1. ATTACHMENT 4

Page 1136 of 2037 ends

1. Begin a class discussion by asking: "What did you notice during the visualization exercise?"

2. Encourage students to share their thoughts and feelings about the experience.

3. Prompt them to reflect on the difficulty of holding all the cups and the impact it may have on their well-being.

Direct Instruction Strategies

1. Demonstration: Model the "can't hold all of the cups" stress reduction exercise to the class.

2. Guided Practice: Lead the students through a practice session of the exercise, emphasizing proper breathing techniques and relaxation.

3. Feedback: Provide feedback and guidance as students practice the exercise, addressing any questions or concerns they may have.

Practice Assignments

1. Individual Practice: Assign students to practice the "can't hold all of the cups" exercise at least three times throughout the week.

2. Journaling: Have students keep a journal to reflect on their experiences with the exercise, noting any changes they observe in their stress levels or emotional well-being.

3. Peer Sharing: Encourage students to share their journal entries with a partner or small group, discussing their experiences and offering support and encouragement.

Team-Based Activities

1. Role-Play Scenarios: Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a stressrelated scenario to act out. Have them incorporate the "can't hold all of the cups" exercise as a coping strategy in their role-play.

2. Group Discussion: After the role-plays, facilitate a class discussion about the effectiveness of the exercise in different scenarios. Encourage students to share their insights and strategies for managing stress.

3. Creative Expression: Have students work in teams to create a poster or presentation that promotes the "can't hold all of the cups" exercise as a stress reduction technique. They should include visuals, steps, and benefits of the exercise.

Formative Assessment Measures

1. Observation: Observe students during the guided practice session of the exercise, looking for proper technique and engagement.

2. Journal Entries: Review students' journal entries to assess their understanding and application of the exercise.

Activities:

1. Emotion Word Association: Give each student a piece of paper and ask them to write down as many emotion-related words as they can think of in 2 minutes. After the time is up, have them share their words with a partner and discuss why they chose those particular words.

2. Emotion Charades: Divide the class into two teams. Give each team a set of emotion cards (happy, sad, angry, surprised, etc.). Each team takes turns sending one member to act out the emotion without speaking, while the rest of the team guesses.

The team with the most correct guesses wins.

3. Emotion Reflection: Ask students to take out a sticky note and write down one emotion they have been feeling lately. Collect the sticky notes and randomly distribute them back to the class. Students will then spend a minute reflecting on the emotion they received and write down a strategy they would suggest to regulate or navigate that specific emotion.

4. Emotion Brainstorm: Give students a minute to brainstorm as many factors that influence their emotions as possible. Encourage them to think beyond the obvious factors like external events, and consider internal factors like thoughts and beliefs. After the minute is up, have a class discussion and create a collective list on the board.

5. Emotion Visualization: Play a short audio clip or show a picture that evokes a specific emotion (e.g. a clip of a baby laughing, a picture of a sunset). Ask students to close their eyes and visualize the emotion being portrayed. After a minute, have them open their eyes and share their experience with a partner.

Would You Rather:

1. Would you rather have complete control over your emotions or have the ability to understand and analyze other people's emotions accurately?

2. Would you rather be able to regulate your emotions effortlessly or have the ability to predict and prevent negative emotions from occurring?

3. Would you rather have a high level of emotional intelligence but struggle with effectively regulating your own emotions, or have low emotional intelligence but excel at regulating your own emotions?
Deep Question:
• How do societal and cultural factors influence the way individuals perceive and manage their emotions?
Applied Scenario-based Question:

Page 1147 of 2037 ends

• Imagine you are in a high-stress situation, such as a job interview. How would you apply your understanding of the complex factors influencing emotions to regulate and navigate your own emotional state during the interview?
Thought Experiment:
• If you could create a pill that could instantly regulate any emotion you're experiencing, would you take it? Why or why not?
Riddles:

1. I can make you smile or bring you to tears, I can change your thoughts and control your fears. What am I?

2. I am something we all have but often ignore, an internal compass that guides us to shore.

What am I?

3. I am hidden within every situation, waiting to be discovered through introspection. What am I?

Synopsis
The Boys & Girls Club program would continue its work at Navigator Elementary, providing a comprehensive after-school program MondayFriday for over 100 Navigator students.

Provide a
Project/Program
Description
The Boys & Girls Club at Navigator Elementary has been a constant in the lives of Rancho Cordova youth and families since 2018, providing a comprehensive after-school program that is available 5 days a week - from the time school gets out (including minimum days/early dismissals) until 6pm. On a typical day, the Boys & Girls Club serves over 100 youth on the campus of Navigator Elementary; providing academic support and enrichment programs designed to keep youth on track and successful both in and out of school. The Club has become a trusted partner and valued member of the school team; providing additional academic support and resources to the schools most vulnerable students. The Club has become an integral part of the school day, and a part of the Navigator team. Our Site Coordinator is traditionally on campus most of the school day and because of a close partnership with school administration, as well as teachers, the Club has been able to further positively impact all students at Navigator by providing school day support. Twice weekly the Boys & Girls Club facilitates High-Yield Learning Activities (HYLA) at recesses that are open to all students on campus. Our Site Coordinator is always “on call” at Navigator during the school day, there to assist with students who have behavioral issues and need time away from the classroom environment.

The Club focuses on helping youth in three critical areas; Academic Success and Career Readiness, Good Character and Citizenship and Healthy Behaviors and Lifestyle Choices. A major point of emphasis for the Club is Project Learn, a holistic strategy for leveraging every moment and dedicated staff to support Academic Success.

Description
Within the last century, recognition of the impact of mental well-being on student retention and success has garnered increased advocacy for mental health services on college and university campuses. As a result, institutions of higher education nationwide now employ multidisciplinary mental health staff, which often includes some combination of full- and parttime psychiatrists, therapists, substance abuse counselors, and social workers to meet the needs of their students and staff. Unfortunately, the need for mental health services on campuses is far greater than what is provided, and many students are unaware of or do not access the services that might benefit them. In efforts to provide the mental health services that are correlated to student success rates, increased transfer rates, and further educational opportunities, as well as advancing wellness more generally among at-promise students from 12-14, AOH would like to continue to supplement our successful project AOH Mind, Body & Soul youth program which is closely aligned with increasing awareness and access to health services.

AOH Mind, Body & Soul is a collaborative work-based learning initiative focused on mental wellness and designed to empower youth ages 12-14 as ambassadors for mental wellness on their campuses and the larger community. Youth are actively engaged as community assets, change agents, and influencers who have the power to improve school-wide mental wellness. AOH Mind, Body & Soul youth program uses a positive youth development framework and addresses Tier 1 needs on the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) continuum. The program consisted of approximately 20 hours of mental wellness literacy training and 20 hours of service projects. Upon completion of the 40-hour program, youth received a $250 stipend.

Through AOH Mind, Body & Soul program youth will gain foundational social-emotional learning skills, build leadership skills, increase their awareness of mental health systems, reduce the stigma associated with mental health, and become familiar with resources for help that they can use personally, with peers, and with family members. The program builds on the assets of neighborhood-based organizations and their success at connecting with youth and their lived experiences.

Funds will supplement culturally responsive services to the various school sites as well as allow us to bring in additional Facilitators who will be responsible for program implementation and mental wellness literacy curriculum. Annually, we will have youth listening sessions around mental health and wellness and destigmatizing the subject matter in their communities. These listening sessions will further our mission of increasing “the number and quality of culturally responsive behavioral health recovery services and programs.”

Team
The Founders of AOH have more than 10+ years of experience in the education system in various roles working with students and young people who need the most support. The rest of the staff are all from the Sacramento community and are from communities of color. These two items are a huge factor in our success as a program as it has built a reputation of trustworthiness. Also, our team is well versed in their field educationally and professionally to support the students that we impact.

We have also partnered with several local student support service as consultants.

Goals
This experience has yielded remarkable outcomes, contributing to elevated graduation rates, improved college and career readiness, increased persistence rates, and holistic measures to promote mental health and wellness. By fostering positive relationships, the program aims to break the results of the War on Drugs, school-to-prison pipeline, and create safer, healthier communities. Through engaging curriculum activities, skill-building exercises, and discussions on system change, participants are empowered to identify ways their school sites can better support social and emotional wellbeing., the program equips the Facilitators with mental health training and mentorship, preparing them to become positive role models who advocate for Additionally themselves and their community.

Furthermore, our dedication to assessing cognitive, mental, and professional growth extends to participants and their families, as well as the overarching program. AOH equips participants with vital insights into the education-life culture and unspoken rules critical to their academic success and overall well-being. Themes emerged from AOH participants, highlighting positive program experiences, boundary setting, increased confidence, empowerment, constructive time use, and effective identification and utilization of support systems.

Architects of Hope, Inc. continuously attends community gatherings, educational training, and professional development summits of numerous organizations throughout Sacramento. Many of whom we have already worked with and/or partnered with. We have also worked within the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) for close to a decade, so we have had our ear to the community for quite some time. This allows us to stay up-to-date on the culture of the area and what it needs to improve.

Returning post social distancing and COVID-19 within the past 12 months, we have learned about the student dilemma dealing with isolation. The time away from traditional in-classroom education had a major impact on the student’s mental health and their ability to accomplish their academic work.

Being stuck at home and having social media being their only outlet to their peers have hurt the youth in many ways.

AOH's goal as an organization is to increase the capacity of our Fellowship program to help with the adjustment back into typical life post-COVID and to utilize AOH's social media platforms more to help reduce the negative stigma and pressure of social media for youth engagement. AOH wants to be able to bring more awareness to our organization and our partnerships along with our initiatives that many could benefit from. The organization will create content that is directed towards the demographic and geographic regions that highlights the programs and partners' involvement in leading the charge of aiding under-resourced and at-promise neighborhoods through the Architects of Hope Fellowship. AOH's content will empower the Sacramento community to be involved and join the campaign as we ignite and innovate our neighborhoods for a better future.

should any
challenges arise?
FCCP made adjustments to the previous JobEx for Youth service modality with the onset of COVID-19 by integrating digital platforms such as zoom, google meets to engage students synchronously, hold student office hours and created semi hybrid online and in-person services. FCCP has a COVID worksite plan in place and regularly updates it in accordance with the Sacramento County Health Order and CDC guidelines. FCCP has integrated Zoom and is always seeking new virtual platforms to integrate both synchronous and asynchronous learning activities strategies and continue to safely provide services and stay in compliance with CDC guidelines. FCCP will continue to stay informed in navigating the principles of change based on research.

February 26, 2024
To Whom It May Concern,
The Folsom Cordova Unified School District, specifically Cordova High School, would like to express support for the Folsom Cordova Community Partnership’s application for the Community Enhancement Grant. This funding would allow the Folsom Cordova Community Partnership to continue expand the Youth Career Center services on the Cordova High School campus to now the JobEx for Youth program. The presence of the organization’s Youth Career Center and Professional Pathways program on our school campus has proved beneficial to the student population. I have seen firsthand how the FCCP has provided services for career readiness as well as Restorative Justice programming for students. This has been evidenced through campus pop-up events for resume building as well as classroom workshops. In addition, the FCCP has partnered with Cordova High in planning the annual Job Fair.

In the 2021-2022 academic school year, Youth Career Center has served 115 Unduplicated Youth, and have had 230 Total Youth Visits to get assistance with resume development, interview preparation, career and college exploration, job applications and understanding employer expectations. Approximately 75% of the youth were Cordova High School Students.

If awarded, the Folsom Cordova Community Partnership will continue to offer on-campus activities to expose student to a wider array of career opportunities, help them develop a more informed sense of their career direction and build a strong correlation between continued education and achieving their career goals. Additionally, JobEx for Youth will prepare and connect students with work opportunities in the local community including internships, job shadowing and part time jobs to help develop technical and professional skills for their future success.

I urge you to give this application your most serious consideration. Should you or your staff have any questions regarding this letter, please contact me at
Sincerely,
Amy Strawn, Principal

Description
During the 2024-25 school year, the NorCal School of the Arts Outreach Program will offer our integrated theatre arts and conflict resolution (socialemotional learning -SEL) residency and after school theatre production programs to 450 students at Williamson Elementary and 524 students at Cordova Villa Elementary serving a total of 974 students. Both schools are located within FCUSD and have Title I designation. Students interested in expanding their connection to theatre arts have the option to participate in a musical theatre production during the spring 2025 in the after school space.

Integrated Theatre Arts & CR/SEL program classes are delivered throughout the regular school day in collaboration with teachers. These classes are led by a NorCal Teaching Artists who weaves social-emotional learning and conflict resolution capacity building signature practices into the arts lessons. Classes support emerging bilingual learners in a culturally responsive and inclusive environment. This culturally responsive classroom program challenges students to utilize their creativity while learning vital collaboration and communication skills. Through the application of the creative process, students learn empathy and resiliency while participating in curriculum that includes theatre, music, poetry, improvisation, dance, and CEIF App #72

creative writing. The active and engaged learning environment provides meaningful ways for students to develop new skills. Students build empathy muscles when they step into a character role and have to understand the character’s motivations and experiences. This skill transfers to other areas of the student's life and creates a practical experience they can reflect on when compassion is needed. Mental health challenges are addressed by creating a vehicle for self-expression in a safe and supportive environment.

Students learn to trust themselves and their decision-making abilities while developing higher-order thinking skills during improvisation exercises.

These classes act as a professional development opportunity for the classroom teachers by providing resources to learn how to integrate SEL strategies through theatre arts as they participate in the process.

Curriculum and lesson plans align with the CA State Arts and ELA Standards and are shared with teachers so exercises can continue once the program concludes.

During the spring of 2025 students interested in expanding their theatre arts experience participate in an afterschool project-based learning model that culminates in a family and community engagement event. This theatrical musical production includes sets, costumes, lighting, sound, and the cutest talent you have ever seen! Families are proud of their children as they sing, dance, and act their way through shows like Pixar’s Finding Nemo Kids or Disney’s The Little Mermaid or Lion King Jr.

The NorCal programs provide a post-COVID response strategy by enhancing the quality of educational services offered to the Rancho Cordova families. This collaborative project engages students in the arts and supports self-expression and identity exercises by creating multiple pathways for student self-exploration. This positively responds to mental health, isolation, and socialization challenges resulting from COVID while increasing confidence, creating a sense of belonging, and building authentic connections to self, peers, and the community. Through the City of Rancho Cordova Community Enhancement & Investment Fund, students benefit from SEL and conflict resolution training, arts engagement, theatre training, and a theatrical music production they would not otherwise have access to.

Project/Program
Goals
The NorCal program is intentionally aligned with the City of Rancho Cordova Community Enhancement & Investment Fund priorities and uses qualitative and quantitative program assessments for progress monitoring.

Goal 1: Provide integrated arts sessions aligned with CA State Art and ELA Standards to 450 students at Williamson and 524 students at Cordova Villa Elementary Schools.

Goal 2: Increase student SEL, conflict resolution, and coping capacity.

Goal 3: Create culturally responsive and inclusive arts learning environments for emerging bilingual learners.

Goal 4: Provide SEL, conflict resolution, and arts curriculum, resources, and professional development for teachers equipping them with skills to continue to guide the integrated arts process.

Goal 5: Train students on positive self and peer assessment and constructive discernment models.

Goal 6: Produce a family and community engagement culminating theatrical musical performance showcase featuring students.

Goal 7: Provide a post-COVID response strategy focused on increasing student confidence, creating a sense of belonging, and building authentic personal connections.

NorCal School of the Arts goal at Williamson Elementary and Cordova Villa Schools is to provide classes for students that also act as a professional development to teachers on theatre arts and SEL integration techniques for the classroom. These classes will further engage students and support the emotional and academic well-being of students. NorCal School of the Arts will provide an after-school theatre program at both schools to help students obtain life skills related to increased ability and confidence with public speaking, self-management, communication and collaboration.

Student involvement in theater arts and SEL-integrated activities provides students critical thinking opportunities to help them in school and beyond.

Student engagement in the arts also positively impacts cognition. Upon the completion of the program, NorCal’s Executive Director will provide an impact report to include video and photo documentation of teaching artists in the classroom/rehearsal room and the students’ final presentation. The impact report will contain attendance records; weekly lesson plans with the specific ELA, SEL, and VAPA standards achieved; as well as survey results. NorCal management will observe teaching artists in the classroom and review daily reports. After each class, classroom teachers will fill out a survey via Google Docs that is programmed to go directly to the teaching artist and the Executive Director/Program Manager so that feedback can be immediately incorporated into the next lesson. Student progress will be notated throughout the process. Formative assessments will be woven into the lesson plans throughout the artistic process of both the classes and the after-school theater program. The curriculum will be created through a backward design approach with the summative assessment (final outcomes) referred to during the curriculum creation process.

NorCal School of the Arts Timeline September 2023 Meet with school principals to schedule classroom visitations and regular day/time for each classroom, decide on show title for spring show and discuss goals.

October - December 2023 NorCal School staff will implement 10 theater arts/SEL integrated classes in each classroom at Williamson Elementary School and Cordova Villa Elementary School. This will have the added benefit of generating excitement about a spring musical. Final class of the 10 class series will include a final presentation for students to share skills obtained. January 2024 Auditions & registration take place for April productions. NorCal School of the Arts (NorCal) invites parent involvement with organized parent meetings that help to explain process, rehearsal schedules, time commitment, and to solicit parent engagement (community building). January-April 2024 Rehearsals begin 3-4 days a week, Afterschool, 3 to 4 days a weeks for 1-2 hours of rehearsal each day.

Community and parent engagement occurs by actively getting them involved in building sets, creating costumes and props, and helping with publicity days over two weekends to engage parents and community to support the final production April 2024. Dress and tech rehearsals, final presentation, performance, & assessments Note: At Williamson Elementary, the principal, Leslee Cottrell and at Cordova Villa Elemtary, Principal Carter are both extremely supportive of NorCal School of the Arts programming and realize the need for the students and teachers to have SEL strategies integrated into the arts. This grant would provide an amazing opportunity for students to participate in the arts while receiving the added benefit of addressing student emotional health. Theater Arts & SEL integrated classes and rehearsals include: Physical and vocal exercises, Improvisation games and SEL welcoming signature activities, movement and main lesson. Students devise a final piece and engage in the creative process together to support building community.

Project/Program
Synopsis
Our enrichment program introduces students to Spanish conversation and culture, fostering creative thinking. With "Art en Español", themed sessions, and engaging activities, we create an environment where students learn the language, appreciating its culture. Acquiring proficiency in a second language instills courage, independence, and awareness, promoting connections across diverse communities.

Project/Program
Description
We provide 1-hour classes, once per week for (3) - 10-week sessions throughout the school year, on elementary school campus, after school hours.

Teaching Spanish to children not only enriches their individual lives but also strengthens the fabric of the entire community, fostering unity, understanding, and prosperity.

Teaching Spanish to children equips them with valuable skills that can contribute to the community's social and economic vibrancy. In an increasingly globalized world, bilingual individuals are better positioned to engage in cross-cultural collaborations, potentially enhancing economic opportunities and cultural exchange within the community. Also, as these children grow into teens and adults with proficiency in Spanish, they become valuable assets in various professions, such as healthcare, education, and business, where linguistic diversity is increasingly valued.

Secondly, by teaching Spanish to children in a diverse community promotes inclusivity by providing a means for effective communication among community members who may have Spanish as their primary language. This linguistic bridge fosters understanding, cooperation, and unity, creating a more cohesive and harmonious community. Lastly, language education instills cultural appreciation and empathy in children, enabling them to navigate and appreciate the rich diversity in their surroundings.

Parents gain the satisfaction of knowing their children are gaining a skill that can open doors in an increasingly globalized world. Additionally, reaching out to neighboring elementary schools amplifies the positive impact, spreading the benefits of language education to a broader segment of the community and contributing to the overall academic and cultural growth of the region. The initiative aims to empower students with a valuable tool while creating a sense of unity and understanding among families and communities.

In Rancho Cordova, we have identified a gap in educational offerings, specifically the absence of a bilingual Spanish enrichment class for our students. Recognizing expanding the horizons of our youth, we propose the introduction of such a program. This initiative not only addresses the growing demand for language learning but also presents an exciting opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a new language. By providing this service, we aim to create a dynamic learning environment allowing them to have a fun and engaging experience within the familiar setting of their school and among their peers.

We sincerely urge you to consider collaborating with us in implementing this language enrichment class in Rancho Cordova. Together, we can empower our students with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world while fostering a sense of community and inclusivity.

Project/Program
Team
There are 3 of us on our development team. We have extensive experience in working with children, developing curriculum and navigating classroom environments. Our commitment to creating a program that resonates with the needs of school-aged children reflects our passion for education and our desire to contribute positively to their development.

With combined expertise, we are well-versed in tailoring lessons that captivate young minds. Recognizing the importance of age-appropriate content, we take pride to balance between educational rigor and the entertainment factor. We are dedicated to ensuring learning is effective and also a source of joy for the children.

Provide your
Project/Program
Goals
The primary goal of our project is to enhance Spanish language learning among students through after school enrichment classes, encouraging understanding of the language and its cultural context. To measure progress effectively, we will conduct proficiency assessments, tracking improvements in speaking, listening, and reading, over specific time intervals. We'll track feedback, gauging students' confidence levels, engagement, and enthusiasm towards the learning process. The goal is to achieve linguistic competence and also to instill a genuine appreciation for Spanish language and culture among students.

To keep the project team focused, a roadmap will be established, outlining specific milestones, deadlines, and responsibilities. Regular team meetings are conducted to assess progress, share insights, and address challenges collaboratively. By maintaining open lines of communication within the team and regularly reassessing our approach, we aim to ensure that our efforts are consistently reaching the goal of providing valuable Spanish learning enrichment classes to students.

Synopsis
Point Break (www.Pointbreakonline.com), a nationally-recognized, evidence-based, anti-bullying/pro-empathy workshop, reduces barriers existing between students. Through high-energy activities, interaction with caring adults and relevant discussion, Point Break draws students together, focusing on empathy/respect. Description
Since 1992, Campus Life Connection (CLC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has served thousands of youth in Sacramento County. CLC’s mission is to develop character, confidence and responsibility in youth through educational, social and physical programs such as Point Break Workshops, which provide hope and effect positive change for individuals.

The goal of CLC s to reach at-risk/high-risk youth to prevent bullying and destructive life choices and to encourage positive behavior that ensures future success in life.

The lives of Rancho Cordova students CAN be transformed in a single day.

Point Break (www.Pointbreakonline.com) is a nationally-recognized, evidence-based, anti-bullying/pro-empathy program that creates an atmosphere of honest communication in which students and faculty collaborate in a workshop setting. Point Break uses evidence-based workshops to make schools more accepting and empowering places.

These workshops have proven to increase empathy, which decreases bullying and harassment, relieves racial and ethnic tension, and unifies the students, regardless of socio-economic status. By students becoming aware that their peers struggle with the same issues, the door is opened for honest sharing and empathy, causing a positive chain reaction on campus. Through this intense, seven-hour process, students who have been silent in the past find courage to share and trust their peers. Other direct results of Point Break workshops are better understanding, empathy among students, and reconciliation between teachers and students, in addition to youth learning leadership skills and gaining confidence.

Research indicates 44% of middle and high schools report bullying and over 160,000 students miss school daily for fear of attack or intimidation by other students. Bullying negatively impacts students’ learning environment, success, and emotional and physical health. Schools with anti-bullying programs reduce bullying by 50%. Point Break has proven to increase empathy and reduce bullying and is a huge success locally. Its workshops empower schools to address many social issues facing students and over 50% of students have admitted have revealed through the workshops that they have had suicidal thoughts. Countless stories of suicide, isolation, addiction and neglect that occur in the lives of students with whom Point Break works are exposed through the workshops, but Point Break provides these hurting students with a path to healing and healthy relationships with adults and other students.

The workshops’ results are so life-transforming that school districts actively seek out Point Break workshops as school staff have witnessed tremendous improvement of students’ behavior and a great reduction of school suspensions. To date, approximately 13 Point Break workshops have been held in Rancho Cordova, benefitting thousands of students from Mills Middle School, Mitchell Middle School, Cordova High School, and Kinney (Continuation) High School. In 2019, one workshop and four followup sessions with one-hundred (100) 7th graders from Mills Middle School were held; one workshop and four follow-up sessions with one-hundred twenty (120) 7th graders from Mitchell Middle School were held; and one workshop and four follow-up sessions with one-hundred twenty (120) students in 9th through 12th grade from Cordova High School were held, for a total of 340 Rancho Cordova students participating. In 2018, one workshop and four follow-up sessions with 7th graders from Mitchell Middle School was held at Sun River. In 2017, two workshops with all of Mills Middle School’s students and eight follow-up sessions were held at Mills Middle School. In 2016, one workshop and four follow-up sessions were held at Mills Middle School, and one workshop and four follow-up sessions were held for Kinney High School students at River City. In 2015, one workshop and four follow-up sessions were held at Mills Middle School, and one workshop and four follow-up sessions were held for Kinney High School students at River City.

Grant funds will provide four Point Break workshop
(https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4jFEk7EadnQ) and four follow-up sessions for Mills Middle School, engaging approximately 360 Rancho Cordova middle- and high-school students and positively changing—directly and indirectly—the lives of thousands more in the community. Point Break supports the mental and emotional development of youth as we teach them empathy and provide struggling students with a hopeful life outlook through the life-changing workshops and follow-up sessions. With grant funding, Point Break’s proven effectiveness will create an empowering, sustainable difference on this and succeeding generations in Rancho Cordova. *Campus Life Connection (CLC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which has served at-risk/high-risk young people in the greater Sacramento area since 1992, is a faith-based organization at its core, but participation in any faithbased activity is optional to youth and they are never required to participate in faith-based activities to receive coaching, mentoring, care and the programs’ full benefits.

Goals
The Search Institute (www.search-institute.org/) developed a list of 40 Developmental Assets for youth and their chance for success in life. The more Developmental Assets a young person has, the greater the likelihood of their success. The Search Institute has a five-decade legacy of examining and making concrete key—but sometimes hidden—dimensions of development, including: personal strengths, skills, attitudes and values; community, school, and family supports and developmental relationships; non-cognitive skills and socio-emotional traits; and personal sparks, passions and purpose. Surveying the target population reveals that, in many cases, the students with whom Point Break works have only two of the 40 Developmental Assets; these two Assets are often a result of the schools’ efforts to engage youth and create boundaries. Based on Point Break’s proven effectiveness in reaching youth to effect positive change, participating students could add an additional 25 Developmental Assets for a total of 27. CLC desires to improve students’ chances of success in life and by adding 25 Developmental Assets, these students substantially increase their potential for a positive future.

Point Break’s specific goal is to decrease bullying and foster empathy among students and, through its day-long workshop and four weeks of follow-up sessions, it also adds 25 Developmental Assets to the students participating, thereby substantially increasing their potential for a positive future. After every Point Break workshop, many faculty and volunteers are close to tears as they relay stories of the students, whom had been in their “family” group (i.e., small group of students with an adult leader) for the day, opening up and revealing their individual struggles of suffering from bullying, depression, suicidal tendencies, and more.

Kimberly Wolfe, Adelante Continuation High School Counselor and Point Break Workshop Group Leader, stated, “For our small school, Point Break has a tremendous impact on our staff and students. Our students share that Point Break allows them to understand each other and staff, but most importantly, know that they are not alone. With an increase in use of social media, students lack the one-on-one connection and interactions, and Point Break helps refocus and renew the importance of in-person conversations. This day helps staff connect with students and learn more about what each of them is experiencing outside the classroom and how this could have an impact inside the classroom. It also helps our students learn a very valuable skill: self-reflection. Many of them come back thinking about the words they say and the impact that words have on others. Point Break is more than just a day workshop for our students and staff; it helps direct and guide our school year. Many times we reference Point Break as a reminder to students of a time when they were focused on compassion and understanding.”
Biddle Consulting Group (BCG) conducted a thorough, two-year research study on Point Break’s effectiveness
(http://pointbreakonline.com/documents/point_break_evaluation_report.pdf).

They evaluated its impact in key areas and found Point Break has a statistically significant impact on students’ attitudes, behaviors and values on campuses. Four weeks of follow-up sessions, conducted by BCG, will measure the success of each Point Break workshop. The pre- and postsurveys given to students learn more about their potential Risk Factors and CEIF App #74

schedule
Point Break workshops are typically held during the school year, between September and April. Workshops are held based on each school’s schedule and preference. The tentative timeline for the four workshops is:

Mills Middle School: September 2024
Point Break also implements a follow-up aspect to each one-day workshop.

The follow-up consists of four sessions that can be done during lunch, during a study block, or even before school. Students who participated in Point Break are invited back during the designated time where a Point Break team member will facilitate an activity and discussion targeting one of the eight key areas (e.g., bullying/teasing, willingness to reach for help, gossiping, openness of expression, judging others, valuing others, having empathy toward others, and having a hopeful life outlook) as a means to continue the momentum started by the workshop. Most follow-ups are done in four consecutive weeks following each Point Break workshop, but they can also be spaced out depending on the need and desire of the school.

Point Break Endorsements
What School Administrators, Teachers, Counselors and Parents are saying… “Every year Point Break has made a tremendous impact upon our school climate. The Point Break staff create a safe environment for our students; they do this by speaking to the heart about real life experiences and then giving students opportunities for intimate conversations with a caring facilitator. Students and staff are incredibly moved by the openness of one another. The repeated feedback from students is that ‘they no longer feel alone.’ I can’t say enough to recommend Point Break!”
— Janice Shippy, Counselor, Mills Middle School
“Point Break has touched the lives of thousands of teenagers and helped make our campuses safer and more welcoming for students.”
— Ron Severson, retired Superintendent, Roseville Joint Union High School District “Point Break has increased staff empathy of students and increases student awareness of each other and has allowed the discussion of tolerance to permeate throughout our campus.” — Bridgette Dean, former Assistant Principal, Adelante High School “It is very hard to put into words the experience of yesterday’s Point Break workshop. It was one of those times where you walk into a room one person, and you walk out changed…the world looks just a little different than it did 8 hours before. I’ve been processing the experience since leaving yesterday and am still marveling at and working through what I saw, heard and felt. I forget that I have worked hard for many years to make my life a safe place for myself and for those who share it with me. Yesterday reminded me that our kids are still living there, in those spaces that are not safe or sane. I was able to leave yesterday and appreciate the life that I have that is safe and away from all of that darkness, but I am very aware that the kids who shared yesterday walked right back into the dark and dangerous places from which they had emerged yesterday morning. I am inspired to continue our work and ensure that we create supports for our kids that reach beyond academics, that we reach into those dark and dangerous places and pull out of them the spirits and souls of the children that live there, and to help those kids heal and grow into the people that we know they can be.” — Gloria White, Teacher, Sacramento HighSchool
“Point Break is a life changing event in the life of students. Students who participate in the Point Break event learn to break down walls and see others differently. It has been an immense pleasure of mine to watch each student feel part of something bigger than their self and to return to their campus with new eyes and a new heart. I recommend that every student attend the workshop at least once. ” — Valerie Erb, Teacher, Roseville High School
“Two months after our Point Break Workshop a parent approached me to discuss her child. She said, ‘Ever since she went to the workshop you did with Point Break my daughter has been different; more hopeful and kinder at home. I feel like that day really helped her.’ When a program helps a kid at school AND at home, it’s a huge success.” — Lori Sipkovich, Teacher, Lincoln High School
“Point Break is an outstanding program. From start to finish students are involved with games, engaging activities, and breaking down social barriers. Lincoln High School has participated in the program many times and has had outstanding feedback from students and staff. They return feeling connected and part of the high school. Any school that is interested in breaking down walls and bringing students and staff together need to participate in the Point Break Program.”

“Initially, I was skeptical when I first heard about Point Break. I knew that we had a need but I was unsure if this program was the way to meet that need. And then I participated in Point Break. I was a believer. It was truly eye opening watching students ‘Cross the Line’. To see the number of our students letting other students see that they were not alone was so powerful. We have a diverse student population; I know that Point Break has done much towards breaking down the barriers between students and student groups. I wholeheartedly recommend Point Break; I also recommend that every adult on campus participate with the students. It is a great program.” — Jon Coleman, Assistant Principal, Roseville High School “The world we live in has changed drastically in the last decade, and our teens face brutal realities that most of us never had to deal with—slurs of intolerance, cyber bullying and ‘sexting,’ crushing pressure to do drugs, to binge drink, to have sex, to be cool, to imitate media icons, to excel. Kids need to know that they are not alone, that they are not the only one facing these problems that seem so insurmountable to them. My experience as a participant in the Point Break program made absolutely clear to me that many of our kids are hurting and they need help.” — Judi Daniels, Teacher, Granite Bay High School
“Point Break was the perfect workshop at the perfect time for our school. We have seen a beautiful shift in our campus culture since the workshop. Point Break has opened doors to respect, kindness, and empathy among all those that attended. It was the most important and effective workshop we’ve ever had on our campus. “ — Leslie Redkey, Principal, Herbert Green Middle School and Point Break Workshop Group Leader “For our small school, Point Break has a tremendous impact on our staff and students. Our students share that Point Break allows them to understand each other and staff, but most importantly, know that they are not alone.

With an increase in use of social media, students lack the one-on-one connection and interactions, and Point Break helps refocus and renew the importance of in-person conversations. As I meet with many of our 8th graders, I am hearing such positive things about their experience! Some of them have asked whether you all will come back...I'm so glad you will have the follow up sessions during lunch! As we look to 7th grade next, please let me know if you need anything additionally.” — Dee Cutter, MS, PPS, Counselor, Rolling Hills Middle School (916-933-9290, ext. 3020) “Thank you….The overwhelming feedback I have received has been very positive. Many parents have contacted me and expressed how much the day impacted their kids—in a good way! Thank you for all you and your team do to make a difference in kids’ lives.”
— Meg Enns, Superintendent/Principal, Gold Oak Union School District (530-626-3150) “PB [Point Break] was fantastic! Thank you so much for supporting us here at SK [Starr King K-8] and being such amazing people. Tell everyone again how awesome they were and how much we appreciate it. I am so proud of you all...”

A parent of a student who attended a Point Break workshop at Camerado Springs Middle School recently emailed Camerado’s principal the following:
“Mr. Shupe,
Just wanted to say thank you for bringing Point Break to Camerado. My son Jackson got in the car today and said it was the best day ever. He went on to explain, with tears and lots of emotion, each part of the day - from the donuts to the team building games to the testimonies and the subsequent discussions. He was particularly impacted by the “cross the line” activity, where he saw students with many different struggles stepping forward and where they got to support each other. This has been something we have tried to teach our kids - that behind every behavior, there is usually a story and most of the time it isn't pretty…walking away from it, he felt like they were looking at each other differently. I'm guessing this is the mission and vision of the program, so I wanted to be sure you got that feedback. Again, thank you so much for make this happen. With gratitude….” What Students are saying about their experience at Point Break… Student Quotes from Oak Ridge High School (the prompt was “What Point Break Means to Me”):
- “Point Break means a whole other family and a new community. We meet people and we relate to them.

People who we never would have talked to. I love this experience and I feel like everyone should have one day to see what Point Break is.”
- “What it means to me is to be encouraging. To see that there’s others going through the same thing as us.

And to get to know new people and create connections. As a senior, I am really going to miss Point Break and wish everyone luck with this in the future.”
- “It means connecting with people on campus.”
- “It means getting together to be together.”
- “It means making friends.”
- “It means being real.”
- “Disconnect and connect.”
- “It means opening yourself up to people.”
- “Being supportive and understanding.”
- “Making new friends and memories.”
- “Good way for team building.”
- “Point Break has allowed me to get out of my comfort zone, learn about what is going on behind the scenes, and make new friends around campus. It has also allowed me to talk about things that usually high school students try to hide.”

I listen to what they got to say and help out.” “Many adults never talk to me as an equal or share their past with me and at Point Break, not only did the adults open up but so did some of my fellow students. It helped me realize that people still have some good in them buried deep down somewhere inside of them. The past is filled with mistakes. The future is strong if you learn from those mistakes.”
“It has taught me that even when I’m playing around and call people names that I can hurt them. After Point Break I became friends with a lot of the people I used to mess with. It opened up an opportunity to have better and more relationships with people. Thank you guys so much for the experience.” “Point Break helped me a lot because I get to see other peoples’ views and the way they live life, and learn that most everyone has the same problems.”
“It affected me by letting my emotions out and telling people how I really feel.” “It affected me to get more active and respectful of people I know and I don’t know.” CEIF App #74

“Point Break changed me as a person, making me care more about others than I already did. I am not judgmental at all.”
“Somehow Point Break really made me feel like I can really open up now. It was sort of a forceful way to make me express myself.”
“I (stopped) being mean to others. I like helping people.” “Point Break was an awesome experience and whenever I begin to gossip I stop and remember PB so I just stay quiet and listen.”
“My experience with Point Break made me realize everyone around you can be hurting and you don’t know it. This allowed me to open up to others.”
“It affected me a lot. I now try opening up to my parents. However, they still don’t really get what I am trying to tell them. I open up to my friends because they really understand.” “Point Break has taught me and opened my eyes to how much stereotyping and bullying goes on around high school. It has taught me how to watch what I say and how to stop and control my words and how they (my words) affect people.”
“Point Break has helped me to respect other people and not judge them so fast; and to not judge them so fast.

Respect how I act around people also. It was a great experienced and I’m glad I went.” “It gave me a lot of insight into others’ lives.”
“I have been talking to others not in my friend group and have been trying to respect more people.” “I loved it. It was fun and really got people closer together. It made me realize more about others, besides what’s just on the outside.”
“It taught me not to judge anyone. People who I would’ve never thought share the same problems I do. I think it is a very effective program.”
“Point Break was amazing. I realize that people aren’t always what they seem to be like. I got to know people that I would have never talked to before and I realized that people have harder times than I do. Thanks Point Break!” “I think before I speak, now. I also have learned to forgive some people in my life.” “Point Break showed me a new side of people, and how much they share the same problems as me even though we are different on the outside.”
“(Point Break affected me) by not seeing through people, but seeing into them. It was life changing.” Student Quotes from Point Break Workshop for Cordova High School on March 12, 2019:
“It was just the best day!!! Thank you so much for your love and passion and what you gave us all today!!” “Today was amazing! Me and my brother definitely have a bond that we never had before and I couldn’t be more thankful. Thank you Point Break!”

“Thank you for making Point Break possible this year! I love spending time with everyone and talking/learning about other people. And giving us the opportunity to talk and making new friends.” “Thank you so much for providing us with the space to have Point Break. You have given us more than just a space, you have given us the chance to heal, reflect, and understand our—as well as others’—lives better than before. Provide a
Project/Program
Description
The Speech & Debate Educational Programs will help elementary, middle and high school students and resident students (grades 4 through 10) of Rancho Cordova City with speech and debate training programs.

The speech and debate programs will provide the students with valuable skills that they will use for the rest of their lives, including but not limited to researching, writing, critical thinking, organization, persuasion, conflict resolution and communication proficiency. These educational tools are necessary in every part of our lives and successfully mastering them at a young age will allow the participants to utilize them in their day-to-day activities. Whether it is online or in person, the skills (researching, writing, critical thinking, organization, persuasion, conflict resolution and communication) will help them articulate their opinions in a constructive format, delivering their thoughts in a clear and concise manner. They will also communicate with peers their own age, develop a level of confidence in themselves, and leave a positive impression upon the people around them. The program will engage the students and the skills acquired will help them excel in their academics and place them on a straight path to becoming successful future leaders in politics, business, law, academics, entertainment, and many other fields.

According to the Stanford article, “The Power of Speech & Debate Education,” (https://snfi.stanford.edu/skills), there are lifetime benefits for students who commit to speech and debate programs. Forbes published an article titled “How to Find the Millennials Who Will Lead Your Company,” (https://www.forbes.com/sites/robertsher/2014/03/02/how-to-find-themillennials-who-will-lead-your-company/?sh=3d697bc37178), which suggests that the leaders of the future are ex-debaters.

The speech program will provide a foundation for various types of speech, categorized as oratorical, persuasive, impromptu, dramatic, humorous, and poetic.

The debate program will provide an overview of different styles of debate, categorized as Parliamentary, Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, Spontaneous Argumentation, Team Policy, and Cross-Examination.

In the academic years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024, Suvidha International Foundation's speech and debate programs impacted approximately 100 students annually, equipping them with crucial communication skills and fostering critical thinking, reasoning, and respect for diverse perspectives.

These students are encouraged to continue attending the programs to further develop and refine the skills they have acquired, aiming to master them effectively.

As we approach the upcoming academic year (2024-2025), there is an opportunity to expand the program's influence even further. It is imperative to sustain our support for this initiative, recognizing its capacity to empower students and nurture future leaders. With the proposed continuation of the speech and debate program for the academic year 2024-2025, we aim to assist another cohort of 100 students, building upon the achievements of previous years.
