2. Update -Pickleball Use Date/Discussion of Additional Courts Per the Commissions request staff presented several options for increasing Pickleball facilities at RMCP. Staff presented several options including; adding new courts, dual striping existing courts, or permanent conversion of existing tennis courts. Staff recommended permanent conversion of two tennis courts based on the use data collected and cost efficiency of using existing underutilized courts. Commissioner Wright asked if we considered converting the basketball courts into pickleball courts. Supervisor Grimaldo stated these courts are used in the evenings on a very regular basis. There was a discussion regarding the consideration of using quieter balls, and posting signage to encourage using quieter balls, as pickleball is noisier and more social than tennis. With the addition of pickleball courts, there is a concern of noise increase to nearby residents and if there would be a need to possibly install a noise-reducing fence. Chair Stroock asked what direction we should take regarding the addition of pickleball courts. Staff recommended converting the two center tennis courts to pickleball courts . Commission can move forward with recommending to City Council, and work can commence this summer (off season). Commissioner Wright asked if the lighting will need to be modified, to which Director Stendell stated it will not be. Chair Stroock made a motion to move forward on the conversion of turning two (2) existing tennis courts into eight (8) pickleball courts, during off season, which was seconded by Commissioner Constant. Motion carried 3/0.
3. Programming Updates
a. Certified Farmer's Market -Staff is looking into obtaining more signage, specifically A- frame signs, along Highway 111. The public is happy with the new location at Rancho Mirage Community Park (west parking lot), which runs through Friday, May 26th , from 8:00 AM -2:00 PM. Live music begins at 9:00 AM and free yoga classes begin at 10:00 AM. This is currently advertised through social media and the City's RIM Weekly Update. b. Resident Golf Program -Chair Stroock reported the numbers are down this year. Council Member Weill asked if we are planning a tournament this year. Chair Stroock indicated we are not. The three participating golf courses are: Mission Hills North (Gary Player Course), Rancho Las Palmas, and Desert Island. The resident card is $69 and provides discounts at all three courses.
c. Friends of the Desert Mountains -Director Stendell indicated Tammy Martin, Executive Director, was unable to attend today's meeting, but reported the following: Full moon hikes are taking place from City Hall parking lot; nature walks are taking place at Blixseth Park, and the birding events at Wolfson Park are popular. Participants are using the pathway from the park to the wash, along Butler Abrams Trail. d. Desert Recreation District -Brenda reported some Rancho Mirage residents expressed an interest in fitness classes; however, there is not enough to interest to hold a class.
Commissioner Wright mentioned Sunnylands offers Tai Chi classes . Maureen indicated they could put together a proposal for the commission; however, outdoor programs will be eliminated in April due to the heat. Chair Stroock asked the commission to consider what they would want.
