SECTION I
PURPOSE OF REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL AND GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS
1.0 PURPOSE OF REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL (“RFP”)
The City of Hemet is currently seeking proposals for the procurement of a hyperconverged solution and professional services for installation. The City of Hemet is issuing this Request for Proposals (RFP) to invite qualified firms to submit a proposal for design, equipment, software, and services required for the migration from an existing Blade Server VMware environment to a new hyperconverged infrastructure (“HCI”). The HCI design will provide flexibility, resiliency, enhanced security and future expandability of the City’s and Police Department network infrastructure. The HCI installation will include configuration and implementation services for the proposed solution.
Vendors must bundle the proposed designed product, Post -implementation Support, Vendor approved training, technical labor, warranty, and customer support information. The proposed solution will include an itemized list delineating material and labor included in the proposed solution.
Ideally, Vendors will be able to demonstrate previous successful experience of their proposed solution with other municipalities similar in size to the City of Hemet.

Backup on Prem and in the CLOUD With HPE StoreOnce,
VEEAM Universal
Please see: https://www.veeam.com/hpe-storage-solutions.html?ad=menu-solutions Backup to the cloud involves using storage that’s made available by one or more cloud providers (like AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and more) as a target for backups instead of a more traditional approach where backups are stored in on-premises infrastructure locally. Cloud-based storage can be the primary target for these backups, or they can be a secondary target, whereby backups are initially stored on-premises and subsequently tiered to cloud-based storage based on time and/or access frequency.
Multiple cloud vendors have multiple security options available to protect data from cyberthreats like ransomware. One of the most critical features to look for is immutability, which means that once your backups have been stored, they cannot be changed or deleted until another specified point in time. This ensures clean recovery in the event of an attack that has compromised production services and possibly backups that have not been made immutable.
Security
Please see Attachment 10 – HPE Nimble Storage dHCI Solution Security Guide – Secure Service Architecture Overview.pdf.
HPE StoreOnce is a disk-based, deduplicating, cloud integrated, backup system delivering rapid backup and recovery, automated protection against ransomware and long-term retention for the hybrid cloud.

Disaster Recovery
Optional:
• Stretch Cluster: In a stretched cluster the servers act as a single system to provide high availability (HA) and load balancing despite not being located in the same facility. A stretched cluster offers the advantage of enabling easy migration of virtual machines from one geographic location to another while maintaining network connections with the other servers within the cluster. This scenario can be useful if, for example, a hurricane or other natural disaster were expected to hit one location.
In this case, critical virtual machines could be migrated to servers within the stretched cluster that are physically located in a different facility. VMware vSphere Metro Storage Cluster is an example of a configuration option that allows IT professionals the ability to create and manage stretched clusters. • VMware Site Recovery Manager and VMware vSphere Replication- VMware Site Recovery Manager™, the industry-leading disaster recovery (DR) software, can be consumed as a perpetual license or as a service through VMware Site Recovery™ for VMware Cloud™ on AWS. Site Recovery Manager automates and orchestrates failover and failback, ensuring minimal downtime in case of a disaster.
Built-in nondisruptive testing ensures your recovery time objectives (RTOs) are met.
Site Recovery Manager integrates with a vast ecosystem of underlying replication technologies, providing maximum flexibility. VMware vSphere® Replication™ provides VM-based replication, supporting a large variety of underlying storage solutions with recovery point objectives (RPOs) ranging from 5 minutes to 24 hours.

Economics:
Hybrid IT with HPE GreenLake
Capacity planning is difficult to get right. Many businesses overprovision IT in an effort to play it safe; others underestimate their future needs and find themselves in a bind.
Both approaches require significant capital outlays and have long procurement cycles, limiting IT agility and restricting business operations. But there is an alternative: the public cloud—a fundamentally different model that changes IT from a capital- to consumption-based expense, so City of Hemet can scale rapidly without predicting capacity. And it offloads much of the “undifferentiated heavy lifting” that comes with operating a datacenter.
If your business uses on-premise IT for reasons such as security, control, and governance, you may hesitate to move to on-demand IT. But good news—HPE Pointnext can remove the burden of choice. HPE GreenLake combines the simplicity, agility, and economics of public cloud with the security and performance benefits of on- premise IT. City of Hemet can determine the “right mix” of Hybrid IT and workload placement without having to choose.

Consumption-based infrastructure on your terms
With its agile pay-per-use service, HPE GreenLake can help your IT organization:
• Avoid IT expenses stemming from overprovisioning
• Improve time to market by maintaining a safe buffer of capacity, ready for use when you need it
• Keep capacity ahead of demand with regular monitoring—and a simple change order to replenish
• Pay for only the capacity used, not the capacity deployed • Reduce IT risk with tailored support
Combine the Benefits of Public Cloud with On-premise IT With HPE GreenLake, your organization gains the agility, pay-per-use billing, and rapid scalability of the cloud service delivery model. Surges in demand are easy to manage, so you get to market faster without wasting capital on overprovisioning IT capacity for peak loads. But the technology resides in your own datacenter, so you maintain control of security, data privacy, compliance, and performance.
With HPE GreenLake, your actual metered usage is billed monthly as a service. This helps you track costs, and includes the infrastructure, software, and support needed to run on-premise workloads with confidence.
Provide Stable, Reliable, Efficient Services
With HPE GreenLake, City of Hemet can stop worrying about your capacity: you have a compute resources buffer in place, ready to use when needed without lengthy procurement processes. Benefits include:
• Maximized business agility—increase capacity in minutes, not months, from the preprovisioned buffer.
• Lower risk of under provisioning and missed business opportunities. Our account support team works with you to monitor usage and suggests actions to replenish capacity before it is needed.
• Reduced business risk, because key workloads can be kept on-premise to meet security, privacy, latency, compliance, and control requirements, complemented by public cloud services as appropriate.
• Enterprise-grade support, making it simpler to operate your Hybrid IT. With one contact for your IT environment, backed by extensive global resources and 24x7 coverage.
• Simpler transitions to new technology. HPE Synergy, for example, delivers a dynamic IT environment; and HPE GreenLake can provide the needed room to grow that environment, because you still only pay for actual metered use.

A Unique IT Model
• Unlike product financing arrangements, HPE GreenLake is a service with variable payments based on actual metered usage, aligning costs to the business. The contract can be multi-year and can accommodate technology refreshes, monthly payments that vary up or down, an easy change order process to add capacity at any time, and shared utilization risk.
• Unlike other utility offers, HPE GreenLake can include all the components needed to bring agility to your workloads: HPE servers, storage, networking, software, ConvergedSystem, and even non-HPE equipment, as well as certain Microsoft Azure services.
• The solution is especially well suited to service providers who need to align their IT cost with revenue, and who can benefit from a trusted IT partner to help operate the datacenter.
No Limit to Customization Possibilities
Gain the speed and convenience of cloud-like IT consumption, the security of on- premises, and the luxury of choice to design a solution that is just right for you. This solution includes a broad range of technology options from HPE and partners, including Microsoft, Docker, VMware®, and others, to design and build a truly customized infrastructure.

• HPE will provide metering tools to measure the Systems’ usage for the purpose of monthly billing. • HPE’s metering tools collect the data needed to determine usage (e.g., server on/off or virtual machine memory consumption, physical core utilization percent, or written GB. • Subject to automated housekeeping routines, unencrypted files remain on Customer’s metering server where Customer can check raw data collected at any time. • HPE’s metering tools will reside on a virtual machine provided by Customer and in its own datacenter, which must meet the minimum specifications for running a current supported version of Microsoft Windows Server operating system.
• All metering happens inside Customer’s datacenter firewall, and an encrypted communication (email or API) with usage data is sent daily to HPE.
• Metering of the Systems will begin on the date of completion of HPE’s installation of the metering tools. • HPE will be responsible for ongoing administration, upgrades, and maintenance of the metering tools.
This will include identification and installation of metering tool patches.
2.3.2 Used Capacity
• HPE will measure the Systems’ usage by the defined System’s Unit to calculate the monthly consumption-based charges. – System Details states the applicable Unit for each System, which will be measured as follows:
a. Virtual Machines (for example, Synergy, ProLiant, or general servers) Virtual Machine usage is measured in Compute Units. A Compute Unit is considered Used Capacity if it is allocated one or more times per day, as collected by the metering tools. “Daily Used Capacity” is the total number of Compute Units allocated in a day.
b. Usable Capacity – Amount of data written excluding RAID or erasure coding overheads.
Applicable to:
• Nimble Storage Arrays – UoM = Written Usable GiB
• StoreOnce – UoM = Written Usable GB
•
The storage device usage is measured in either gigabytes (GB) or gibibytes (GiB)* of storage written to at a usable capacity level (i.e., excluding RAID or Erasure Coding overheads).
Storage is considered Used Capacity when data is sent from a server and written to the disk drives in the array as determined from the data collected by the metering tools. Data is collected daily, and “Used Capacity” is the average storage space in use over the month.
* Note: If required, GreenLake Central is capable of translating the measured data to Gigabytes (GB), Gibibytes (GiB), Terabytes (TB) or Tebibytes (TiB) respectively.
Further Units of Measures are defined, if applicable, in relevant Exhibits.
• Unless otherwise specified in Exhibits, “Used Capacity” is the monthly average of the applicable Daily Used Capacity, rounded to the nearest whole number (for example, 10.01 up to and including 10.49 will be rounded down to 10, and 10.50 up to and including 10.99 will be rounded up to 11). • For an HPE provided software product that is directly licensed to individual hardware devices or other variable/quantifiable condition, HPE will update GreenLake Central monthly, with the number of HPE
13.B

licenses used (for example, License per CPU). The same rounding factor described above for the hardware layer will also be applied to the number of licenses used. • For an HPE-provided software product that is licensed at an environment wide level (for example, not dependent on the amount of hardware deployed or other variable/quantifiable condition), the charge would be fixed per month irrespective of usage.
2.3.3 GreenLake Central
• HPE will provide online access to GreenLake Central using HPE-provided authorized user credentials.
Customer will have access to daily and monthly capacity usage reports and can run standard and customer generated ad-hoc reporting.
• Customer and HPE will mutually agree on the list of Customer employees who will have access to the usage data.
• Customers per Unit metered usage is sent daily to GreenLake Central, and usage is summarized monthly.
• HPE only uses the metering data for capacity planning meetings and for invoicing activities.
2.3.4 Audit of Metering Tools
• Each calendar quarter, with 3 business days advance notice, HPE may inspect, audit, and test the metering scripts, all usage data, and Systems for the purpose of validating proper usage data. • Inspections may be immediate in the event of an apparent metering script failure, any discrepancy in usage data, or any suspected manipulation.
2.3.5 Capacity Services
• During the support planning and review sessions (see Section 2.2) Customer and HPE will review capacity and consumption trends and discuss Customer’s consumption forecast to assess if capacity needs to be adjusted.
• As required, and subject to the contract change management process, HPE will order appropriate Systems, coordinate installation of additional capacity, and amend software licensing requirements as required. All capacity will require the same level of maintenance to any existing Systems. • HPE will install, configure, and test additional capacity within 1 calendar week of arrival at the Customer location, unless otherwise agreed.
• Should growth or usage be lower than originally agreed, at HPE’s discretion, HPE is entitled to physically de-install and remove unused capacity using the contract change management process.
HPE will notify Customer of such intent and Customer will have 14 calendar days from date of the notification to make the Systems ready for removal.
• HPE will manage capacity for the Systems listed in – System Details.
Support Services
HPE will provide a comprehensive set of hardware and software support services for the Systems, as specified in Exhibit B– GreenLake Core Services Details. These include reactive services for remote diagnosis and support, as well as on-site hardware repair if it is required, along with a selection of options that customize the reactive service experience to your requirements. In addition, there are many proactive service selections to tailor the support for your highest priority areas of need.

3. Term
System Term
• Each System Term will start on the earlier of
a. the date that HPE notifies Customer in writing of the completion of the HPE installation services of the System at the Customer’s designated Site(s), or
b. the day on which the Customer can use the System.
and will continue for an initial period defined in – System Details or in a corresponding change request (“System Term”), after which it will automatically extend on a month-to-month basis until the Agreement is terminated unless the System includes components not able to be extended monthly (e.g. third party software), in which case the System Term will extend for the minimum period of time applicable to the components.
• HPE will notify Customer 90 days in advance of end of System Term.
Effective Date
This Agreement is effective as of the last date of signature in the Signatures section of this SOW (“Effective Date”).
Agreement Term
This Agreement begins on the Effective Date and remains in force until the end of the last applicable System Term, including any applicable extension period.
4. Charges
Pricing
4.1.1 Pricing Mechanism
• The basic pricing factor is Used Capacity, subject to the pricing model and minimum invoiceable amounts stated in Exhibit C– Pricing.
13.B
HPE GreenLake Agreement | Response to [client] Page 9 of 14
Customer Project Reference Number: [insert]

• “Monthly Price” is calculated by
a. multiplying the greater of Used Capacity or Reserved Capacity by the applicable Price per Unit (reported in
the Price Bands in Exhibit C– Pricing), for each
System,
and adding
b. any applicable fixed monthly charges stated in Exhibit C– Pricing, and
c. any applicable charges for optional services stated in Exhibit C– Pricing.
4.1.2 Minimum Invoiceable Amounts
Premium Model
• The Reserved Capacity is a percentage of the Requested Capacity as specified in – System Details.
The Customer will be invoiced on the greater of Reserved Capacity or Used Capacity. • Buffer Capacity is additional capacity above the Requested Capacity and will only be invoiced when used.
• Variable Capacity is the delta between the Requested Capacity and Reserved Capacity. This capacity is billed when used.
4.1.3 Pricing in case of metering issues
• If daily usage data cannot be collected by the metering scripts for more than 2 calendar days (including delays in implementing the metering script), HPE will send Customer an email indicating that the daily usage data cannot be gathered. Customer will immediately assist HPE in resolving the problem. • If this issue continues for up to 30 days and
a. usage data has already been collected, then HPE will use the usage data from the day immediately preceding the failure for that 30-day period. b. no usage data has been collected, then HPE will use the mid-point between the Installed Capacity and the Reserved Capacity for that 30-day period.
• If the issue continues beyond 30 days, one of the following will apply until the daily usage data issue is resolved:
a. If the cause is attributable to Customer, the billable amount will be equal to the Installed Capacity. b. If the cause is attributable to HPE, the billable amount will be equal to the Reserved Capacity. • If the cause is due to unidentified or unforeseeable external factors (in other words, neither HPE nor Customer has directly contributed to the failure through action or inaction), the billable amount will be equal to the mid-point between the Installed Capacity and the Reserved Capacity.
13.B

4.1.4 Price Adjustments
• Prices are calculated upon the Customer’s estimated average growth per year through the System Term as set forth in Exhibit C– Pricing.
• HPE and Customer will negotiate equitable changes to the prices and fees in good faith if a. Customer does not meet the annual growth rate assumption as stated in Exhibit C, or b. where a material adverse change in Customer’s financial or operating condition has occurred since this Agreement was signed.
Invoicing
4.2.1 Start of Monthly Invoicing
• Invoicing for the Services will begin upon the earlier of:
a. the first day after HPE notifies Customer in writing of the completion of the HPE installation services (outlined in Section 2.1.3) of the System at the installation Site(s), or b. the day on which Customer can use the System.
• If installation services are delayed for a cause not attributable to HPE, on the 31st day from delivery of System to the installation Site(s) HPE will start invoicing Customer the Delay Fee monthly in arrears.
Delay Fee is calculated as follows:
• HPE will invoice Customer monthly in arrears, unless otherwise stated, for • the Monthly Price,
• any applicable additional charges (e.g., Early Termination Fees, Return Fee, etc.), and • any applicable taxes (e.g., sales, value-added (VAT), or similar taxes) • Option for payment in full-subject to terms and approval
4.2.2 Taxes
• Prices are exclusive of applicable present or future sales, value-added (VAT), or similar taxes. HPE’s invoices will separately state charges and applicable taxes. Unless Customer has provided HPE with an appropriate exemption certificate before the relevant Services are performed, Customer will pay or reimburse HPE for all present or future taxes, fees, and surcharges applicable to the Services (however levied).
• If Customer is required to withhold any tax related to the Services, Customer will reduce payment to HPE by the amount of the tax and provide HPE with applicable tax documentation necessary for HPE

to reclaim all withheld taxes. If Customer has not provided the necessary documentation within the time prescribed by the taxing authority, Customer will reimburse the withheld amounts to HPE. • Each party is solely responsible for all taxes and assessments upon its own real and personal property and net income.
4.2.3 Questions About Invoices
Customer will have 3 business days to contact the HPE ASM or HPE Service Advisor following the monthly billing cycle with any questions or concerns regarding the invoice.
Payment
• Customer will pay invoiced amounts without offset within 30 days of the invoice date. • Where the invoice value is disputed then the Customer must pay the reserved capacity amount within 30 days of invoice date and state the reasons for withholding. The parties will work in good faith to resolve the dispute promptly.
• HPE may suspend or cancel performance of Services if Customer fails to make payments when due.
De-installation Fees
• Upon a System Term’s expiration or termination, or HPE removing unused Systems, Customer is responsible for any reasonable fees associated with the de-installation, packing, and transportation to return Systems to HPE (“Return Fee”).
• The parties will discuss and agree upon a termination assistance plan, as may be required. If Customer requires termination assistance services, HPE will provide them at HPE’s then-current professional services time and materials rate.
• Customer must return the Systems to HPE within 30 days from expiration or termination date.
Early Termination Fees
4.5.1 Termination for Convenience, Customer Breach or Insolvency • In the event of termination of this Agreement or any System before the expiration of the System Term, Customer must pay HPE “Early Termination Fees,” calculated as follows:
a. for each impacted System: (the Reserved Capacity at the time of the termination x applicable price per System per month x the number of months remaining in the affected System Term) x 1.1, b. for fixed monthly charges: the sum of any monthly fixed charges set forth in Exhibit C x the number of months remaining in the affected System Term, and c. for optional software or services: Early Termination Fees, if any, stated in the relevant Exhibits.
• Customer will finally settle all liabilities arising out of any termination in accordance with this Section upon payment in full of HPE’s final invoice, which will include a. the Early Termination Fees,
b. any outstanding consumption-based charges, and
c. the Return Fee.

Technical white paper Page 3
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This technical white paper reviews the features and benefits of the HPE Alletra disaggregated hyperconverged infrastructure (dHCI) solution. It also describes the solution’s hardware and software components and subsystems.
The paper explains the functions and inner workings of the solution and its physical and logical constructs, along with the various management workflows and internal and external interfaces. Particular attention is given to the ease of management provided by the automation of the HPE Alletra dHCI architecture as well as the VM-centric, unified management approach that simplifies system administration, lifecycle management, and independent scaling.
Finally, the paper also reviews supported configurations and deployment models and provides sample use cases for HPE Alletra dHCI.
Target audience
This technical white paper is intended to assist IT planners, architects, system administrators, system integrators, and other technology professionals who are researching, evaluating, or implementing the HPE Alletra dHCI solution. It explains key aspects of the solution’s performance, scalability, availability, and manageability; provides a brief overview of the basic system design; and offers deployment and integration guidelines to help with project planning and development of best practices.
INTRODUCTION TO HPE ALLETRA DHCI
Many enterprises are hampered by legacy IT infrastructures that require ever-increasing labor to deploy, maintain, and manage. These legacy IT architectures are composed of silos of compute, storage, network, and data protection platforms with distinct administrative interfaces. Each platform requires support, maintenance, and licensing—not to mention a set of dedicated team members who are capable of administering and maintaining the system. Tasks from scaling out compute or storage to performing system updates require intensive hands-on efforts that take valuable resources from more productive efforts. Traditional hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) addresses some of these concerns but is not without its own limitations. The ability to scale out in exactly the manner needed without stranding resources is often restricted to a one-size-fits-all approach to scaling that leaves resources stranded while ballooning power, cooling, and even licensing costs.
The infrastructure problem
Datacenters have grown in scale and complexity. At the same time, the need to react to changes and scale accordingly has also grown. The modern datacenter must be able to provide the compute, storage, and networking appropriate to workload and growth needs while minimizing administrative overhead, complexity, capital, and operational expenditures.
Enterprise IT organizations have invested in a variety of discrete data storage, data efficiency, and data protection solutions to cope with this ever-increasing data growth. Each of these solutions requires its own pool of knowledge and resources to deploy, administer, and maintain.
HCI was developed to address some of these concerns, and it brought ease and simplicity by enabling the deployment and management of a full stack within a scalable, individual unit. However, for all these advantages over a traditional three-tier architecture, HCI comes with its own tradeoffs, including a lack of flexibility in scaling, the potential for stranded storage and compute resources, the necessity to significantly overprovision storage to achieve desired data resiliency, and the potential for higher licensing costs.
The solution: HPE Alletra dHCI
The HPE Alletra dHCI solution addresses both the challenges of a traditional three-tier architecture and the limitations of a traditional HCI solution. It brings the ease of deployment and management that people have come to expect from HCI while at the same time delivering the flexibility and power of a traditional three-tier architecture that modern infrastructures demand. Because it is able to scale and grow as needs and demands evolve, the problem of leaving behind unused or under-utilized resources is not a concern.

TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW
This section introduces key terms related to the solution, describes the solution architecture, and provides an overview of deployment and management guidelines.
Terminology
The following terms define key elements and constructs of the HPE Alletra dHCI architecture:
• Compute node. An HPE ProLiant DL server is the basic compute node building block of the HPE Alletra dHCI solution. For new server deployments, these systems are preinstalled in the factory with HPE OEM VMware ESXi™ and HPE Storage Connection Manager software.
For the most current list of supported HPE ProLiant DL servers, see the HPE Alletra dHCI Overview. • Storage array. The basic storage unit for the solution is an HPE Alletra 6000 or HPE Nimble Storage Gen5 storage array, configured from the factory to enable HPE Alletra dHCI functionality. For the most current list of supported storage arrays, see the HPE Alletra dHCI Overview.
• Virtualization. Shipped from the factory with VMware ESXi installed on the compute nodes, HPE Alletra dHCI deploys and integrates with the industry-leading VMware vSphere® platform. At deployment time, either a brand-new VMware vCenter® appliance is deployed by dHCI, or it integrates with an existing vCenter environment—all while applying Hewlett Packard Enterprise and VMware® best practices. • HPE InfoSight. The industry’s most advanced AI for infrastructure brings software-defined intelligence to the datacenter with the ability to predict and prevent infrastructure problems before they happen and to drive actionable management solutions. HPE InfoSight is a SaaS service that does not require on-premises deployment and is included with HPE products with no additional licensing. It is a proactive support service for all HPE Alletra dHCI support plans that complement the HPE support portal for comprehensive care.
HPE InfoSight continuously monitors your HPE Alletra dHCI infrastructure, checking over 100 indicators to evaluate system health and automate support case creation.
• Network Automation. During dHCI deployment, this feature can automate most of the configuration of certain HPE networking switches, greatly reducing the amount of time and the number of steps required. • One-Click Update. With this feature, dHCI automates the lifecycle management and updating of various solution stack components, such as the HPE Alletra 6000 or HPE Nimble Storage array OS, ESXi, Storage Connection Manager, and Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP). • HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage vCenter plugin. This plugin provides a dashboard in the VMware GUI for monitoring the environment and making certain changes to it, such as upgrading passwords, adding servers, creating datastores, or updating the software that runs on the hosts or the HPE Alletra 6000 or HPE Nimble Storage array. In addition, the plugin provides information about the health of servers, network switches, and storage, as well as best practices configuration compliance.
Architecture
At its core, HPE Alletra dHCI leverages industry-leading HPE ProLiant DL servers, HPE Alletra 6000 or HPE Nimble Storages arrays, and HPE networking switches. The dHCI software running on the HPE Alletra 6000 or HPE Nimble Storage array automates the deployment, scaleout, and day-to-day management of the cluster stack, either integrating with existing VMware vSphere environments or deploying an entirely net new vSphere environment. All deployments are automatically implemented with VMware and HPE best practices. All day-to-day management operations can be performed through the HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage vCenter plugin and are executed by the HPE Alletra or HPE Nimble Storage array itself. There is no need to install additional management virtual machines (VMs) on each compute node.
An HPE Alletra dHCI implementation includes the following components:
• Two or more network switches (either validated ones from HPE or customer-provided switches that meet HPE Alletra dHCI networking requirements)
• Two or more HPE ProLiant DL servers (Intel® or AMD)
• A storage array, either HPE Alletra 6000 or HPE Nimble Storage, factory-enabled for dHCI • dHCI deployment and management software, which resides on the array

Compute node
HPE ProLiant DL servers form the core of the HPE Alletra dHCI compute infrastructure. Either Intel or AMD based HPE ProLiant DL servers can be used. For the most current information about supported models, see the HPE Alletra dHCI Overview and the relevant new servers or existing servers deployment guide.
With regard to compute nodes, there are two options for deploying HPE Alletra dHCI:
• Integrate the dHCI array into an existing vSphere cluster, which enables existing HPE ProLiant DL environments to be integrated seamlessly with dHCI.
• Deploy dHCI with new HPE ProLiant DL servers that are imaged with HPE OEM ESXi and HPE Storage Connection Manager software at the factory, ready for deployment.
New server deployments require four ethernet ports for deploying the management and iSCSI networks. More networking ports and cards can be added as needed to accommodate the specific requirements of deploying additional VM workloads. Regardless of how many additional networking ports are used, however, the management and iSCSI traffic for the dHCI cluster remains on those initial four ports on each server.
Storage array
The central component of the HPE Alletra dHCI solution is the storage array. Initially released on HPE Nimble Storage Gen5 arrays, HPE Alletra dHCI also supports HPE Alletra 6000 all-flash storage arrays. These arrays are configured in the factory specifically for use in dHCI deployments. The array-based management software orchestrates deployment and compute scaleout as well as day-to-day dHCI management functionality. This component requires low overhead and has low impact. Data traffic always gets top priority, so array performance is never affected by these management services.
NOTE
HPE Alletra dHCI uses iSCSI for serving data traffic. Fiber Channel HBAs can be added to the HPE Alletra dHCI storage array after deployment. Their use is supported, but they are outside the management scope of the HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage vCenter plugin.

Technical white paper Page 6
Network
The HPE Alletra dHCI network operates as a standard access layer, with redundant connectivity for all storage, data and management traffic, and network uplinks to the core. This architecture provides full redundancy for data, management, and VM traffic. It is architected with low latency for the data path and fault tolerance for all essential functions of the system. NIC resiliency is achieved by splitting the data and management interfaces across NIC ports, further adding to the system’s fault tolerance.
HPE Alletra dHCI is available with HPE Aruba or HPE M-Series switch configurations. In addition, the network is standards-based, which offers customers their choice of networking infrastructure. For more information about networking support and best practices, see the HPE Alletra dHCI Solution Network Considerations Guide.
Deployment
Typically, the deployment of a traditional three-tier infrastructure requires a large amount of work to prepare, install, and configure a functioning vSphere environment. Version compatibility matrixes must be cross-verified, software downloaded and installed, switches and settings configured. The HPE Alletra dHCI solution automates most of the stack setup process, reducing the amount of time and effort required and minimizing the potential for human error in the deployment process.
There are two options for deploying dHCI into an environment:
• New-server deployment, which uses new HPE ProLiant DL servers that are factory-configured for use with dHCI • Existing-server deployment, which supplements an existing HPE ProLiant DL vSphere cluster with a new dHCI-enabled HPE Alletra 6000 or HPE Nimble Storage array
The existing-server option provides flexibility and helps you get the most out of a previous investment in still-useful server hardware. It offers additional flexibility on the networking side as well. Network infrastructure can be provided by validated switches from HPE or by customer-supplied switches that meet HPE Alletra dHCI networking requirements. Validated HPE switches include HPE Aruba, HPE M- Series, and HPE FlexFabric switches. For more information about networking requirements for third-party switches, see the HPE Alletra dHCI Solution Network Considerations Guide.
After the stack components are racked and cabled, and the networking is configured, the actual deployment of the stack runs from the HPE Alletra storage array. This process provisions the storage array and configures the vSphere cluster from the compute nodes in as little as 15 minutes.
Preparation operations include three general tasks:
1. Rack the array, servers, and switches.
2. Cable the array, servers, and switches.
3. Configure the switch networking.
After the preparation is complete, the HPE Alletra dHCI setup wizard is launched from the array. All that is needed from the user is basic information such as array management IP addresses, management and iSCSI IP address ranges, and new ESXi root passwords. Servers are discovered automatically, or—in a new server deployment—they can be selected to build the cluster. After this information is provided, the stack setup process runs automatically. The dHCI stack is fully integrated into either an existing or a new vCenter environment, with all HPE Storage and VMware vSphere best practices implemented by default. No additional configuration or settings are needed to ensure best practice adherence.
Deployment operations happen in the following order:
1. The HPE Alletra 6000 or HPE Nimble Storage array is configured.
2. Optional: The switches are configured.
This step applies only if the environment contains switches capable of supporting the dHCI Network Automation feature, and the feature is selected.
3. The ESXi compute nodes are discovered.
4. The ESXi compute nodes are validated for conformance.
5. The ESXi compute nodes networking and iSCSI initiators are configured, and any provisioned datastores are attached.
6. Optional: The VMware vCenter Server® instance is deployed from an array-based OVA and is migrated to array storage by using VMware vSphere® Storage vMotion®.
13.B
Technical white paper Page 7
This step is performed only if the option to deploy a new vCenter Server instance is selected. Otherwise, dHCI integrates with an existing vCenter Server instance.
7. Optional: VMware vSphere® Distributed Switch™ configuration is implemented, and virtual networking is migrated.
This step happens only if a new server is deployed with the vSphere Distributed Switch option selected.
FIGURE 2. HPE Alletra dHCI deployment process
The following guides provide more information about requirements for HPE Alletra dHCI and its deployment:
• HPE Alletra dHCI Solution Network Considerations Guide • HPE Alletra dHCI Solution Security Guide
• HPE Alletra dHCI and VMware vSphere New Servers Deployment Guide • HPE Alletra dHCI and VMware vSphere Existing Servers and vCenter Deployment Guide Network Automation feature
The dHCI stack setup process can further simplify the deployment of an HPE Alletra dHCI system by automating the setup of certain supported HPE network switches during the deployment process. This Network Automation feature reduces the number of steps required to configure the network switches by more than 70% as additional compute nodes are added to the system. Additional configuration checks help ensure that network setup and best practices are configured.
With Network Automation, switch configuration is fully automated for the tasks of setting switch access, assigning appropriate VLANs to ports, and configuring the spanning tree. These are tasks that would otherwise have to be configured for each port connected to the compute nodes and arrays.
For a list of currently supported switches, see the HPE Alletra dHCI Overview.
Management
The dHCI stack is managed through the HPE Alletra and Nimble Storage vCenter plugin, which runs on the storage array and is automatically registered during deployment. HPE Alletra dHCI-specific features are enabled, providing additional functionality over the standard vCenter plugin. All day-to-day management tasks can be handled through the plugin, which removes the need to interact with multiple interfaces or follow multiple steps to perform administrative tasks.
The plugin handles the following functions:
• Stack performance, utilization, and health monitoring • Datastore provisioning for both VMware vSphere® VMFS and VMware vSphere® Virtual Volumes™ (vVols) • vVol VM backup and recovery
13.B
Technical white paper Page 8
• Inventory monitoring and compute nodes scaleout
• Event and alert monitoring
• Configuration checks
• Ease of update with the One-Click Update feature
• Protection against accidental deletion of VMs
Lifecycle management with One-Click Update
One of the biggest differences between the HPE Alletra dHCI solution and a traditional three-tier infrastructure is in lifecycle management, which is typically a labor-intensive and involved process. The compatibility of various firmware and software components must be researched and verified; trusted software versions must be downloaded and staged; and, finally, each component must be updated separately from the others. HPE Alletra dHCI greatly simplifies this work by automating the entire update process for the full stack.
The dHCI software validates the versions present, comparing them against continually validated and updated software catalogs to ensure that the software packages presented are fully vetted and supported. During upgrades, all elements are updated nondisruptively, including the SPP, ESXi, HPE Storage Connection Manager, and the array OS and its associated components (VMware vSphere® Storage APIs - Array Integration [VAAI], vSphere APIs for Storage Awareness [VASA], and the vCenter plugin).
FIGURE 3. Lifecycle management through One-Click Updates A central component of the One-Click Update feature is the dHCI software catalog. Software catalogs are pulled daily from HPE InfoSight by the dHCI software on the array. The catalogs themselves are constantly validated and updated, ensuring that the update paths offered are valid and supported. Within the catalogs are the various catalog versions that specify which versions the HPE storage array OS, HPE Storage Connection Manager, the SPP, and VMware ESXi are to be upgraded to, all of which are fully validated for compatibility with each other. To ensure adherence to proper upgrade paths, each catalog also contains a matrix of versions from which these components are allowed to be upgraded. All catalogs are fully tested and validated before they are published.
After dHCI receives the updated catalogs, it compares the currently installed software versions to the update-from versions in the catalogs and filters out those that do not match. Only valid update-to catalogs can be selected for update.
13.B
Technical white paper Page 9
FIGURE 4. Catalog versions for update
When the user selects Update for a specific catalog, the update process is initiated. From this point forward, the process is fully automated and hands-off.
These are the steps in the HPE Alletra dHCI One-Click Update process:
1. The user issues a dHCI catalog update request.
2. The dHCI array downloads the update software.
All software is downloaded directly from HPE.
3. Update prechecks are performed to verify installed versions and system health.
4. Nondisruptive updates are applied to the array OS and dHCI software.
One storage node is updated at a time. Nondisruptive failover between the nodes ensures that data continues to be served.
5. The first HPE ProLiant compute node is put into maintenance mode after VMs are migrated to other nodes VMware vSphere® Distributed Resource Scheduler™ (DRS) is used to migrate the VMs.
6. ESXi and SCM are updated, followed by a node reboot.
7. The SPP is updated, followed by a node reboot.
8. The host exits maintenance mode, and VMs are migrated back.
9. Steps 5 through 8 are repeated for each of the remaining hosts in the cluster.
10. Post-upgrade checks are performed to confirm that the update was successful.

vVols and Storage Policy-Based Management
VMware Virtual Volumes, or vVols, are an integration and management framework within vSphere that designates the individual VM objects, rather than the datastore, as the unit of management for the storage array. If vSphere APIs for Storage Awareness (VASA) is leveraged, the storage array is fully aware of the underlying VM objects. A VASA Provider is the entity that enables this translation between vSphere and the storage array. For HPE Alletra 6000 and HPE Nimble Storage arrays, the VASA Provider runs on the storage array itself, giving it the same level of resiliency as any other array-based management service. The VASA Provider makes it possible to manage and implement storage policies on a per-VM basis through Storage Policy-Based Management (SPBM).
What this means in terms of day-to-day administration and management is that a storage administrator does not have to provision and configure individual datastores to match the needs of various users and VMs. Instead, a VM storage policy is created and applied either to existing VMs or to new ones when they are created. When a storage policy is applied, only vVol datastores that are compatible with that policy are shown. In addition, any policies specified are automatically configured on those VM objects by the array itself, with no further intervention needed from a dedicated storage administrator.
FIGURE 6. vVols with SPBM
13.B
Technical white paper Page 11
With vVols, each piece of the VM (whether the VMX file, the VMDK virtual disk files, or snapshots) is treated as a vVol object that is visible to and managed by the array. All access to these objects comes through the protocol endpoint, which provides a common access point to all vVol objects in the storage container. In the context of vVols on HPE Alletra 6000 or HPE Nimble Storage, the vVol storage container is a logical folder on the storage array. Each vVol object is its own individual volume object, which provides a great degree of granularity with regard to management, while also providing great simplicity because all management is through the SPBM VM storage policies.
To create or manage VM storage policies, go to vSphere Menu → Policies and Profiles → VM Storage Policies.
FIGURE 7. VM Storage Policies
Because each vendor has its own vVol implementation through its own VASA Provider, select Enable rules for “HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage” storage when creating a VM storage policy. This option enables HPE array-specific storage policy rules.

Technical white paper Page 12
The first tab that appears in HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage rules is the Placement tab, which displays the rules that control where a VM is allowed to be placed and what policies are applied to the VM objects.
FIGURE 9. HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage rules—Placement tab Available placement rules and descriptions include the following:
• Deduplication. Makes it possible to enable or disable deduplication on the VM vVol objects. • Application policy. Displays array-provided back-end policies specific to application types, such as setting the storage block size to match expected application I/O characteristics.
• All-flash. Lets you specify whether to allow only VMs to be placed on all-flash storage. • Performance. Lets you set quality-of-service (QoS) limits on the VM for both throughput and IOPS. • Protection schedules. Applies a snapshot policy to the VM, including the schedule, frequency, retention, replication destination, replica behavior, and hourly, daily, weekly, or by-the-minute schedule templates. • Data encryption. Enables encryption of the VM vVol objects on the array.
For any given VM storage policy, one or more—or all—of these rules can be selected.

NOTE
With HPE Alletra 6000 and HPE Nimble Storage arrays, it is possible to set QoS at both the vVol datastore level and the individual VM level.
VM level QoS is applied through the VM storage policies, and the datastore-level QoS is set on the datastore properties in the HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage vCenter plugin.
For more information about vVols for HPE Alletra dHCI, see VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes with HPE Alletra dHCI.
Scaleout
With its ability to match the needs of the infrastructure, a dHCI cluster can scale independently as needed. Compute nodes can be added to the vSphere cluster through the HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage vCenter plugin inventory interface. The processes of joining the vSphere cluster, configuring the host networking, and connecting storage are all automated by the dHCI management software. If the Network Automation feature is leveraged during cluster deployment, then it also assists in automating the switch configuration for the newly added servers, further simplifying the scale-out process.
Storage arrays can be scaled out for additional performance by adding arrays to the array group, or they can be scaled out for capacity by adding disk shelves to the existing array. All of these operations, including removing compute nodes from a cluster, are nondisruptive to the operations of the dHCI infrastructure.
This ability to scale also provides a smooth path to upgrade the computing component of the solution. New servers can be added, workloads automatically migrated, and older servers decommissioned with ease.
Workloads
Backed by the HPE Alletra 6000 storage array or by an HPE Nimble Storage array, HPE Alletra dHCI has the power to deliver sub- millisecond latency for business-critical workloads. Across the world, users leverage HPE Alletra dHCI for diverse workloads, including virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), SQL, and Oracle® databases, containers and Kubernetes, and mixed workloads. Intelligent, self-managing arrays—coupled with the ability to apply IOPS and throughput QoS—deliver consistent and reliable storage performance across workloads.
With its extensive storage capabilities and ability to size compute nodes to best fit the CPU, memory, and networking requirements of your workloads, the HPE Alletra dHCI solution is clearly sized for what workloads demand and able to grow with evolving needs.
Data protection and disaster recovery
Because HPE Alletra dHCI runs VMware vSphere with storage provided by HPE Alletra 6000 or HPE Nimble Storage arrays, any backup or disaster recovery technologies that are supported with those technologies are also supported with dHCI. If the environment leverages vVol datastores, then VM backup, recovery, migration, and cloning capabilities are built into the HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage plugin by default. This comprehensiveness enables an environment to provide out-of-the-box protection for the VMs, without the need for additional software solutions.
HPE Alletra dHCI also integrates natively with HPE Backup and Recovery Service, an HPE GreenLake service that provides seamless edge- to-cloud backup and recovery capabilities, all manageable through a unified interface within the HPE GreenLake platform.
With underlying storage provided by HPE Alletra 6000 or HPE Nimble Storage arrays, any backup technology vendors such as Veeam and Commvault are also fully supported.
For native VMware disaster recovery, VMware Site Recovery Manager™ is also fully supported with HPE Alletra dHCI, with integration provided by the HPE Alletra and HPE Nimble Storage Replication Adapter.
HPE provides industry-leading ransomware protection, disaster recovery, and data protection with simple-to-deploy-and-use Zerto software.
It delivers enterprise-level protection through easy-to-use tools and near-zero recovery point objectives, to deliver outstanding data protection and recoverability.
Ultimately, the best practices for a data protection and disaster recovery implementation depend on the nature of the workload, on recovery point objectives, and potentially on compliance. Guidance from compliance regulations, application vendors, and corporate governance all play a role in developing an appropriate data protection scheme for any given environment.
Peer Persistence and VMware vMSC
In relation to disaster recovery, HPE Alletra dHCI also supports the HPE Peer Persistence feature. Peer Persistence pairs two arrays to act in effect as a single stretched cluster—with synchronous data replication between them and a witness VM at a third site to provide any necessary tie-breaker services. Arrays configured with Peer Persistence can also be incorporated with VMware vSphere Metro Storage Cluster (vMSC), extending that data availability for vSphere beyond a single physical or logical site.

For more information about VMware vSphere Metro Storage Cluster, see the VMware document Implementing vMSC Using HPE Peer Persistence.
MANAGEMENT CAPABILITIES AND INTERFACES
The solution provides ease of management through the HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage vCenter plugin. The plugin’s capabilities are organized on multiple tabs: the Home Dashboard overview, Datastores information, Inventory and Scaleout reports, Alerts, and Configuration Checks. Features such as One-Click Update as well as integration with other technologies, such as HPE InfoSight Integration, the CSI plugin, and vRealize operations simplify day-to-day management tasks.
Dashboard
When the HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage vCenter plugin is opened, the first tab that displays is the Home Dashboard, which provides an overview of the health of the entire dHCI stack. It shows the performance characteristics of the storage array, datastore and vVol VM protection status, utilization of compute and storage, stack component health, and any alarms and events.
FIGURE 12. Home Dashboard
Performance
The Performance section provides an eight-hour historical view of latency, IOPs, and throughput (in MiB/s) of the storage array. You can display instantaneous data for any point in time within that eight-hour period by using the cursor to hover over that point. A pop-up window displays the read, write, and overall performance characteristics for that point in time for the measure that is being displayed.
Protection
The Protection section displays the count and percentage of protected resources. For VMFS, it displays at the datastore level; for vVols, it displays at the granularity of the VMs. For either category, the dashboard shows the number and percentage that are protected locally by array snapshots or protected remotely by being replicated to a partner array. It also shows how many have neither type of protection.
Usage
Metrics in the Usage section are separated into Virtualization and Storage utilization:
• Virtualization shows the percentage of total CPU and memory utilization for the compute cluster within vSphere. • Storage shows the capacity utilization of the storage array.
You can hover the cursor over the Savings area to display a breakout that shows how space is being saved.
13.B
Technical white paper Page 16
FIGURE 13. Savings area
System
The System section displays the health and status of various dHCI stack components in three categories: Virtualization, Compute, and Storage.
FIGURE 14. System section
• Virtualization breaks out to show the ESXi hosts, datastores, and VMs that have warnings or errors. Clicking in any of those individual areas takes you to the relevant section within vSphere. • Compute shows the warnings and errors for the physical servers. Clicking in this section takes you to the Servers portion of the dHCI Inventory.
• Storage shows the warnings and errors for the storage array. Clicking in this section takes you to the Storage portion of the dHCI Inventory.

Alarms and Events
These two sections show warnings and errors that occur within alarms or events for dHCI and the storage array. (vSphere alerts and events are viewed through the typical vSphere interfaces.) This brief overview of the alarms and events that have occurred can help you determine the next course of action for resolving them. The Events section provides additional details.
FIGURE 15. Alarms and events sections
Datastores
The Datastores tab makes it easy to provision, monitor, and manage the VFMS and vVol datastores. An important distinction between the two is that for VMFS, all dHCI management is handled at the datastore level, whereas for vVols, the plane of management is at the VM level.
For VMFS datastores, there is a summary of utilization and performance, as well as a more detailed view of the various datastores’ performance and protection information. You can also actively manage the datastores through this interface. New datastores can be provisioned, and existing ones can be edited, grown, or deleted. In addition, VMFS datastore snapshots can be taken, the VMFS datastores can be cloned, and datastore snapshots can be mounted to recovery VMs.
The vVol datastores differ from the VMFS datastores. Through the vVol section, you can provision new datastores and edit, grow, or delete existing vVol datastores. Because VMs are the plane of management for vVols, additional features such as snapshots, cloning, and restores are all managed under the vVol VMs tab of the plugin.
For information about how to perform these management actions, see the HPE VMware Integration Guide for HPE Alletra 6000 and HPE Nimble Storage on HPE InfoSight.

vVol VMs
After VMs are deployed on vVol datastores, regardless of whether storage policies were applied to them, they are displayed in the vVol VMs tab of the HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage plugin. From here, a user can clone or restore entire VMs or individual VMDKs, delete vVol VMs, synchronize application snapshots if they are in use, perform operations on VMs that are replicating to the local array, or even undelete VMs that were deleted within the last 72 hours.
For detailed information about managing vVol VMs through this section of the plugin and more information about vVols, see the HPE VMware Integration Guide for HPE Alletra 6000 and HPE Nimble Storage.
Inventory and scaleout
The Inventory tab of the HPE Alletra 6000 and Nimble Storage vCenter plugin lists the physical components that make up the dHCI cluster.
These components include the storage array (or arrays, if grouped), the HPE ProLiant DL servers, and—if the Network Automation feature is used—the HPE networking switches. Basic information, including status and health, is displayed here.
FIGURE 20. Inventory tab
13.B
Technical white paper Page 20
FIGURE 21. Pools, arrays, and replication partners on the Inventory tab Tasks such as adding or removing servers to scale the system or changing the root and HPE iLO passwords for the ESXi compute cluster are managed from the Servers section of the Inventory tab.
Add server
To scale out the vSphere cluster, make sure that the new server or servers are properly racked and cabled, and that network configuration is completed. Note that if the environment was deployed with the Network Automation feature used on supported switches, then Network Automation also manages most of the switch configuration for this process. After the servers are in place and powered on, select Expand cluster to add ProLiant Server. Then discovery runs automatically and finds any servers capable of being added to the cluster. The discovery operation might also discover other servers that appear to be unsupported and list the reasons they are not scale-out candidates.

After the servers are selected to be added, the system prompts you for the management, the HPE iLO, and iSCSI network IP address ranges.
FIGURE 23. Configure servers
After all values are provided and the summary is reviewed, the dHCI software goes through the automated process of adding the host or hosts to the existing cluster and configuring networking and iSCSI.
Alerts
The Events section displays logs and alarms that are generated by the dHCI management software and by the array itself. The Logs tab shows all events; the Alarms tab shows only events of Warning or Critical severity. Both tabs allow you to filter by severity, date range, category, and by whether the events are array specific.
FIGURE 24. Logs tab
13.B
Technical white paper Page 22
The Alarms tab provides additional features for managing alerts. Events can be acknowledged or unacknowledged, reminder frequency can be changed, and events can be deleted. This degree of control enables a user to not just monitor the environment but also dig more deeply into events for troubleshooting.
FIGURE 25. Alarms tab
Configuration Checks feature
In addition to following best practices in deployment, HPE Alletra dHCI regularly monitors its infrastructure to confirm continuing adherence to best practices, check system health, and detect failures or faults.
The Configuration Checks feature collects configuration information about the vCenter Server and the storage array, verifies this information against a set of rules, and provides a report on how the configuration complies with the rules. Next to each rule, it provides a status. Under the Severity column, it displays Major, Warning, Minor, and Information labels. These severity levels indicate whether the configuration is compliant with the rule or whether it needs to be fixed. You should resolve any issue that has a severity level of Major.
By default, the Configuration Checks feature runs once a day, but you can run it manually any time you choose. Depending on the size of your vSphere environment, this operation might take a few minutes. You can monitor its progress by viewing the vCenter task list.
The rules list receives regular updates to ensure that all necessary components are being monitored and the most current best practices are being followed.
13.B
Technical white paper Page 23
In the example shown in Figure 26, the Configuration Checks feature is alerting that certain VMFS datastores and vVol VMs are not currently protected by snapshots and also pointing out a mismatch in the NIC Teaming Policy between the ESXi hosts.
FIGURE 26. Configuration Checks report
The teaming and failover settings of the ESXi hosts show that one host has only a single active adapter assigned to vSwitch0, versus two active adapters for the other two hosts. This discrepancy would not trigger an error condition within vSphere, but it is not a fully resilient configuration for the HPE Alletra dHCI cluster management network. Configuration Checks alerts an administrator that this is not an ideal situation and offers a chance to remediate the condition before it becomes an issue.

One-Click Update feature
Lifecycle management of the HPE Alletra dHCI stack is handled through the Update tab. Once daily, the HPE Alletra dHCI management software connects to HPE InfoSight and receives any updated software catalog information. The versions installed in the environment are compared to the upgrade matrixes in the catalogs, and the administrator can easily choose the appropriate catalog.
FIGURE 28. Update catalog versions

After you click Update for a particular catalog, HPE Alletra dHCI begins downloading all necessary software packages from HPE. After the packages are downloaded, pre-checks are performed to ensure that all installed versions are correct, configurations are properly applied, and the environment is in good health.

CSI plugin
Kubernetes is becoming an ever-more-integral part of many environments. HPE Alletra dHCI is fully supported with Kubernetes. Integration with the underlying storage is provided through the HPE CSI Driver for Kubernetes, which enables the array to provide persistent storage to Kubernetes containers. For more information about the HPE CSI Driver for Kubernetes, see the HPE Storage Container Orchestrator Documentation. For a specific example, see HPE Reference Configuration for Kubernetes Deployment with Google™ Cloud™’s Anthos™ on HPE Alletra dHCI.
VMware vRealize Operations integration
HPE Alletra dHCI supports integration with VMware vRealize® Operations™. To enable the integration, the HPE Storage Management Pack for VMware vRealize® Operations Manager™ is needed. This management and operations platform helps VM administrators leverage their existing vRealize Operations Manager (vROps) implementation to monitor HPE Alletra dHCI performance, capacity, and health. As an added bonus, this management pack also enables support within vROps for HPE Alletra 6000, as well as for legacy HPE 3PAR, HPE Primera, and HPE Nimble Storage arrays.

HPE ALLETRA DHCI BENEFITS
The solution’s many benefits can be summarized under the categories of flexibility, ease, strength of resilience and performance, and cost effectiveness. HPE Alletra dHCI brings the ease of management of HCI to the flexibility and power of traditional three-tier architecture.
Flexible scaling
In traditional HCI solutions, scaling is typically limited to linear scaling of compute and storage together. Although some sizing on the new nodes might be possible, the result is often stranded resources—storage or compute that goes unused or unneeded. HPE Alletra dHCI eliminates this issue by offering the ease of scaling that traditional HCI brings to the table, along with the flexibility of independent scaling provided by traditional three-tier architecture. Any number of models across the HPE ProLiant DL server line can be used with HPE Alletra dHCI, with the ability to select the appropriate CPU, memory, or even NIC configuration sized to match the compute workload demands of the environment. There is no need to add storage if more is not needed.
Alternatively, if storage scaleout is needed, it can be accomplished without having to add unnecessary compute nodes. Storage array controllers can be scaled horizontally or vertically to match demands. Disc shelves can be added to increase total capacity, or arrays can be added to the array group to improve storage performance. Storage pools of differing performance levels can also be added, if needed. An array group might be made up of an all-flash array and a hybrid array, allowing the provisioning of datastores to meet performance needs.
All of this flexibility enables you to size and grow your environment in response to workload demands without wasting resources or money.
Ease of management
HPE Alletra dHCI combines the power and flexibility of a traditional three-tier architecture with the simplicity and ease of management that is the hallmark of HCI. At each step of the infrastructure’s lifecycle, HPE Alletra dHCI provides automation to ease the burdens faced by today’s IT staffs. Deployment, scaleout, monitoring, provisioning, and full-stack lifecycle management are all handled by the dHCI management software, reducing the management burden that is so often a source of pain.
Enterprise-level resiliency and performance
HPE Alletra dHCI is built on the known and trusted technology base of HPE servers and storage arrays. Through these components, the solution delivers sub-millisecond latencies and a 99.9999% availability guarantee, providing piece of mind and cost-effective performance for your business-critical workloads. This protection can extend beyond a single site, with native support for asynchronous replication as well as
13.B
Technical white paper Page 30
support for synchronous replication through the Peer Persistence feature. By configuring HPE Alletra dHCI with Peer Persistence, a VMware vSphere Storage Metrocluster user can enable the vSphere cluster to span two sites, ensuring immediate failover capabilities.
Cost-effective operation
With its ability to scale independently to match workload demands and its out-of-the box data resiliency that requires no additional nodes, HPE Alletra dHCI helps you avoid wasting valuable capital on underused equipment. The automation of deployment, management, provisioning, and updates means that person-hours can be focused on the tasks that bring value to the organization—potentially providing up to five times more efficiency1 for better economics.
HPE ALLETRA DHCI USE CASES
The HPE Alletra dHCI solution supports a wide range of use case scenarios, including business-critical and mixed workloads. The following workloads are common on HPE Alletra dHCI:
• Private cloud/datacenter consolidation
• Tier 1 applications
• VDIs
• Dev/test environments
• Databases
• Virtual server workloads
• Containers/Kubernetes
SUMMARY
As this paper has shown, the HPE Alletra dHCI solution offers a major improvement over both traditional three-tier architecture and traditional HCI solutions. It provides ease of deployment and management while retaining the flexibility and power of a traditional three-tier architecture. With the automation of its architecture, flexible scalability, and features that provide ease of management, the solution simplifies system administration, lifecycle management, and independent scaling.
